Malik Washington Gains 164 Ground Yards In 35-20 Loss To Rutgers

Washington had a historic rushing game while the defense added two interceptions to its nation-leading total.

PISCATAWAY, NJ — Malik Washington ran for the most yards by a Power Conference true freshman quarterback since 2019 in Maryland's 35-20 road loss to Rutgers (5-5, 2-5 Big Ten) on Saturday.

Washington led Maryland's (4-5, 1-5 Big Ten) ground effort with 164 rushing yards — the program's second-highest mark by a quarterback — as the Terps collected over 300 total ground yards for the first time since 2019 and averaged 10.5 yards per carry, tying the program's highest mark set back in 1950.

Maryland got on the board 37 seconds into the game as Washington broke off a 73-yard run on the Terps' second play from scrimmage. The run marked Maryland's longest offensive play of the season, its longest quarterback run since 2015 and its longest rushing touchdown by a quarterback since 2014.  After the Terps and Scarlet Knights traded scoring drives, Washington connected with Kaleb Webb for a 21-yard touchdown strike to give Maryland a 17-14 lead late in the second half.  Maryland snagged a pair of interceptions in the contest to add to its nation-leading season total of 17, but a trio of second-quarter touchdowns helped the Scarlet Knights defeat the Terps.  How it Happened:
1st Quarter:
  • Rutgers won the coin toss and deferred, sending the Terps' offense to the field first.
  • Washington broke off for a 73-yard touchdown run to put the Terps up on their second play from scrimmage.
  • Scruggs picked off the Scarlet Knights on the 1-yard line, turning Rutgers away on its opening drive.
  • DeJuan Williams picked up a 13-yard 1st down rush to extend the Terps' second drive.
  • Maryland took a 7-0 lead into the second quarter after the defense posted its 15th shutout quarter of the season.
2nd Quarter:
  • Rutgers used a nine-yard passing touchdown to tie the game and cap off a seven-play, 53-yard scoring drive.
  • Maryland regained the lead as Sean O'Haire hit a 27-yard field goal to end a 10-play, 71-play drive that lasted close to six minutes.
  • Rutgers responded with a 45-yard passing touchdown to take its first lead of the day.
  • Nolan Ray broke off a 52-yard run to get the Terps to the red zone.
  • Washington connected with Webb for a 21-yard touchdown to put Maryland back on top.
  • Rutgers caught a five-yard touchdown with 34 seconds left in the half to take a 21-17 lead into the half.
  • La'khi Roland snagged an interception in the endzone on a Rutgers hail mary in the closing seconds.
3rd Quarter:
  • Nahsir Taylor recorded his second sack of the season on Rutgers' opening drive.
  • The Scarlet Knights opened the second half with an eight-play, 75-yard touchdown drive to extend their lead.
  • Maryland picked up a 4th-and-1 conversion to extend its first drive of the half.
  • Williams charged forward for a 20-yard gain and a Terps 1st down.
  • Maryland forced a turnover on downs late in the quarter to get the ball back near midfield.
  • Ray rushed for 13 yards to move the chains late in the quarter.
  • Rutgers took a 28-17 lead into the final frame.
4th Quarter:
  • Washington picked up 21 on the ground on the first play of the fourth quarter.
  • O'Haire drilled a 44-yarder to bring Maryland back within a score early in the fourth.
  • Rutgers iced its fifth win of the season with a five-yard rushing score with four minutes remaining.
Numbers to Know:
  • 0: The Terps still haven't allowed points on an opposing team's opening drive this season.
  • 7: Maryland's defense has snagged an interception in seven-straight games.
  • 10: Daniel Wingate recorded 10+ tackles for the fifth time this season.
  • 10.5: Maryland tied its program-high in yards-per-carry with 10.5 (Against Virginia Tech in 1950)
  • 14: Maryland has only allowed 14 first-quarter points in conference games this season.
  • 15: The Terps have posted 15 shutout quarters this season.
  • 17: Maryland's 17 interceptions on the season are the most in the nation.
  • 53: Ray's 53-yard rush was his longest of the season.
  • 73: Washington's 73-yard touchdown run was the Terps' longest offensive play of the season, its longest quarterback run since 2015 (75 yards by Perry Hills) and their longest rushing touchdown by a quarterback since 2014.

Malik's Magnificence :
  • Washington's 164 rushing yards were the second-most by a Maryland quarterback in a game and set a school record for rushing yards by a freshman quarterback. It was also the highest total by a Power Conference true freshman quarterback since Ole Miss' John Rhys Plumlee ran for 212 against LSU in 2019.
  • Washington's 73-yard rush for a touchdown on the second play of the game was the longest rush by a Maryland quarterback since Perry Hills had a 75-yard non-scoring rush against Ohio State on Oct. 10, 2015. The last quarterback to rush for a longer touchdown was C.J. Brown was a 75-yard rushing score against West Virginia on Sept. 13, 2014.
  • The 73-yard rush by Washington is the second-longest among Power Conference quarterbacks in this season. Only Arizona State's Jeff Sims' 88-yard rushing touchdown at Iowa State (Nov. 1, 2025) was longer.
  • Washington's 141 first-half rushing yards were the most by a Terp in a first half since Anthony McFarland ran for 253 vs. Ohio State on Nov. 17, 2018.
  • Washington's 2,056 passing yards on the season are second-most by a Power Conference true freshman quarterback through nine career games since 2020 (Cal's Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele has 2,195 this season).
  • Washington has 191 completions on the season, good for third-most by a Power Conference true freshman quarterback through nine career games since 2020 (Mississippi State's Will Rogers had 239 in 2020 and Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele has 194 this season).
  • His 13 passing touchdowns are tied for the second-most by a Power Conference true freshman quarterback through nine career games since 2020 (15 from Oklahoma's Caleb Williams in 2021, 13 by Virginia's Anthony Colandrea in 2023).
Michael Locksley's Takeaways:
  • "We played a relatively clean game and showed a little more balance on offense in terms of the ability to get the run game going."
  • "Our defense has carried us for seven games and have played their butts off."
  • "Malik's ability in the run game opened up the natural run game where our backs started being able to get some positive yardage, and it was good to see Malik make that point of emphasis go for us."
  • "This group will keep pushing and we'll keep fighting for each other and finish this thing up the right way."
  • "Our energy level's been good and I'll keep remaining positive and they'll keep showing up. It's going to be important for us with the limited opportunities remaining to make sure we do all we can for these older players that deserve it."
Washington's Lessons:
  • On his run: "I was making sure nobody was behind me."
  • "We found growth and the ability to be able to run the football. Adding myself into that just helps the office even more."
  • "I wouldn't say it was so much that we were being hindered, but the run game was able to work for us, so we stuck with it."
  • "I understand the game a little more and some situations. I'm getting those reps under my belt."
Wingate Down the Stretch:
  • "Having trust in our younger guys and doing it for our older guys, having pride and playing as a team, playing as a brotherhood, and just going out here and doing what we can do for the last few games."
  • "We're bringing younger guys along with us and having guys prepared for when their number is called. When the time is called and they're in there, it's no worry, no doubt, no fall off. Just having the next-man-up mentality and being a better leader. We're getting those guys to have that mentality."
Up Next:
  • Maryland heads to Urbana-Champaign, IL, for a meeting with Illinois on Nov. 15. Kickoff is set for 3:30 PM and will air on FS1.
