Maryland Falls To Michigan In Three Sets

The Terps stumbled against the Wolverines in their second match in as many days.

COLLEGE PARK, MD — Maryland (8-16, 1-13 Big Ten) played in its second match in as many days and fell to the Wolverines (17-8, 7-7 Big Ten) in three sets (25-18, 25-10, 25-15) at the Schanwald Pavilion on Sunday afternoon.

Haley Melby had a big day for Maryland, tallying three of her eight total kills and an ace in the opening set. Sydney Bryant also pitched in a trio kills against the Wolverines.  Duru Gökçen and Eva Rohrbach continued to lead the defensive charge for the Terps. They combined for seven blocks on Sunday to raise their respective season totals to 114 and 108. Ajack Malual got hot late to continue her strong season with six kills in the loss. How it Happened:
Set 1:
  • Michigan jumped out early, using an ace to claim a 6-2 lead. 
  • Bryant recorded Maryland's first kill of the day.
  • A Wolverines ace put them ahead 12-5.
  • Three straight Melby kills brought Maryland within four. 
  • An ace from Melby gave the Terps their 10th point of the set. 
  • Bryant picked up another kill late in the set. 
  • Michigan won the opening set 25-18.
Set 2:
  • The Wolverines used another early ace to take a 6-1 lead. 
  • Melby stayed hot with an early kill.
  • Another Bryant kill gave the Terps their fifth point of the set. 
  • Michigan snagged an ace in an 8-1 run to take a 17-6 lead. 
  • Malual picked up a trio of kills late in the set. 
  • The Wolverines took the second set 25-10.
Set 3:
  • An early Malual kill gave Maryland its first point of the frame.
  • The Terps took a timeout as Michigan took a 7-2 lead. 
  • Olivia Ruy collected a pair of kills in the set. 
  • Melby grabbed her sixth kill late. 
  • Michigan ended the day with a 25-15 set win.
Numbers to Know:
  • 114: Gökçen tallied three blocks on Sunday to bring her season total to 114, the third-highest mark in the conference. 
  • 273: Ally Williams has the eighth-most digs in the Big Ten with 273. 
  • 321: After Sunday's match, Malual is up to 321 kills on the season, which is tied for the sixth-highest mark in the conference.
