COLLEGE PARK, MD -- The University of Maryland women's tennis team defeated VCU 6-0 in the Terps first of two matches of a Friday doubleheader.
"The team competed well this afternoon, we always have battles with VCU and knew we needed to start well and the team was able to do just that," said Head Coach Katie Dougherty. "The momentum from doubles carried into singles and we played well across the board."
Kallista Liu and Ema Kovacevic got things started early for the Terps, sweeping the No. 1 doubles match 6-0.
Danielle Hack and Diya Challa kept it going for Maryland in the No. 2 doubles match. After going back and forth early, the match was tied at 2-2. Hack and Challa then took four straight games to win the match 6-2 and clinch the doubles point for the Terps.
In singles Kallista Liu picked up where she left off, cruising through the No. 1 singles match, winning 6-0, 6-2.
Oliwia Orlinska pushed the Terps ahead by three, taking the No. 4 singles match 6-0, 6-1.
Only needing one more singles win to clinch, the Terrapins simultaneously won three singles matches. Diya Challa took the No. 6 singles match 6-2, 6-0, Ema Kovacevic took the No. 2 singles match 6-2, 6-2 and Tamari Gagoshidze took the No. 5 singles match 6-2, 6-2.
Danielle Hack was leading in the No. 3 singles match 6-1, 3-4 when the match ended.
