Volleyball Outlasts Coppin State For Five-Set Midweek Win

The Terps have won six of their last seven matches after a successful Tuesday in Baltimore.

BALTIMORE, MD - The Terps (6-3) went up north for a five-set battle with Coppin State (5-7) on Tuesday, and emerged victorious (21-25, 25-18, 25-21, 20-25, 15-10) after a crucial fifth-set response. 

After a late Coppin State run earned the Bald Eagles the Set 1 win, Maryland responded with two dominant sets to take a lead in the match. Duru Gökçen led the way with 12 kills and 6.5 blocks while Ajack Malual recorded 14 kills and a trio of aces.

Coppin State took the fourth set to force a decisive fifth set in the midweek clash. Malual took over in the final set, recording two crucial aces (one that ended the match) and several timely kills to seal the Terps' sixth win in their last seven matches. 

How it Happened:
Set 1:
  • Haley Melby opened the match with a kill.
  • An ace from Melby gave Maryland a 4-3 lead. 
  • Back-and-forth action saw the Terps and the Bald Eagles tied at each mark from six all the way through 14.
  • A 3-0 Terrapin run put them up 16-14. 
  • Coppin State used a 5-1 run to go up 19-17 in the first set. 
  • The Bald Eagles took a 22-19 lead late in the set. 
  • Coppin State won the first set, 25-21.
Set 2:
  • A 5-1 run featured an ace from Malual as Maryland opened an 8-3 advantage. 
  • A kill from Gökçen gave the Terps an 11-5 lead. 
  • A kill from Lily Wagner put UMD up, 16-12.
  • A 5-0 Terps run featured two kills from Eva Rohrbach and put them ahead, 21-13.
  • Coppin State ended the second set with a service error to seal a 25-18 set win for Maryland, evening the match. 
  • The Terps hit .400 while limiting the Bald Eagles to .100 in the set. 
  • Gökçen had four kills in the second set to lead the team.
Set 3:
  • An early 4-0 run put Maryland ahead, 6-3.
  • Melby's sixth kill put the Terps up, 10-9. 
  • Gökçen's 10th kill of the day gave Maryland a 14-13 lead. 
  • A 3-0 run brought Maryland from behind back into a 19-17 lead. 
  • A kill from Rohrbach capped off a 3-0 run that extended the lead to 22-19.
  • Malual finished off the set with her ninth kill to close out a 25-21 win. 
Set 4:
  • The Bald Eagles used an early 4-0 run to build a 4-1 lead. 
  • A kill from Malual brought Maryland back to a 6-4 deficit.
  • A 4-0 run trimmed the Coppin State lead to 11-9. 
  • A string of Bald Eagles runs led to a 25-20 Coppin State win to force a fifth set. 
Set 5:
  • Malual's 13th kill put the Terps up, 3-2.
  • Back-to-back attack errors from Coppin State put UMD ahead, 5-2.
  • Malual's second ace highlighted a 5-0 run that gave Maryland a comforting 7-2 advantage. 
  • A 4-1 run from Coppin State brought the match back to a 10-8 Terps' lead. 
  • Back-to-back errors from the Bald Eagles gave Maryland a 13-9 lead. 
  • Malual finished off the set and the match with another ace. The Terps took the final set 15-10. 
Numbers to Know: 
  • 2: The Terps improved to 2-0 all-time against Coppin State in their first meeting since 1974.
  • 4: Maryland had four aces in the win.
  • 5: The Terps' two most recent wins have both come in five sets. 
  • 6: Maryland has now won six of its last seven matches.
