Washington, Wingate Garner Big Ten Weekly Awards

COLLEGE PARK, MD – University of Maryland quarterback Malik Washington and linebacker Daniel Wingate have each been recognized by the Big Ten for their outstanding play in the Terps win over Wisconsin on Saturday. Washington has been named Big Ten Freshman of the Week for the second time this season, while Wingate earned his first Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week honor.

Washington threw for 265 yards and accounted for 3 touchdowns (2 passing, 1 rushing) with zero interceptions in Maryland's 27-10 win at Wisconsin. His 62-yard touchdown strike to Shaleak Knotts was the longest of his career.

Through four games, Washington has thrown for 1,038 yards and accounted for 10 touchdowns. His passing yards are the most for any Power Conference true freshmen since Jayden Daniels in 2019 (1,073). Washington, who has only thrown one interception, is the first Big Ten quarterback this century to throw for 250 or more yards in each of his first four career games.

Wingate led the Terps with 11 tackles, 1.0 sacks, 1.5 tackles for loss and a quarterback hurry against the Badgers. He paced a Maryland defense that held Wisconsin to just 10 points and only 61 rushing yards on 42 rush attempts (1.5 yards per carry).

Wingate leads the Big Ten in total tackles with 39 (5th nationally) and he's posted 10 or more tackles in three of four games this season. Maryland's defense ranks No. 13 nationally in points allowed per game (10.8) and the 46 total points allowed through four games is the lowest for a Terps defense since 2013. Maryland also ranks third nationally in red zone defense, allowing opponents to score only 50% of the time.

Washington, Wingate and the Terps return to action on Saturday, Oct. 4 against Washington. The game is set to kickoff at 3:30 p.m. and will air on Big Ten Network and the Maryland Sports Radio Network.
