Lasse Kelp's Late Goal Earns No. 23 Terps 2-2 Penn State

Maryland pushed its unbeaten streak to seven matches to start the season.

STATE COLLEGE, PA — The No. 23 Terps (5-0-2, 1-0-1 Big Ten) continued their unbeaten start to the season with a 2-2 draw on the road to Penn State (2-4-2, 0-2-1 Big Ten) in a midweek Big Ten clash on Tuesday night.

The Terps scored the first half's lone goal, but Penn State found the equalizer in the second. Both squads found timely goals in the match's closing minutes to earn the 2-2 final.

Farouk Cisse, a freshman from Germany who joined the team days before the season started, put Maryland on the board in the 36th minute on the Terps' second corner of the match. The initial kick led to a scramble in front of the net. When the ball found Cisse, he drilled it through the PSU defense for his first-career goal.  A strand of saves in the first half's final minutes from Laurin Mack kept Maryland ahead by one after 45 minutes of action.

PSU's Ben Madore evened the match in the 51st minute after forcing a defensive turnover near the Maryland goal. The Terps were down a man for the final 17 minutes of play and PSU scored in the 85th minute on a chaotic sequence in front of Mack. The Terps, however, were awarded free kick a minute later and Lasse Kelp drove it home for his first goal of the season.  Maryland and Penn State both had ample scoring chances in the closing minutes, but settled for a draw when the final whistle blew.

  • Leon Koehl had a pair of good looks in the first half, one coming in the 31st minute that narrowly missed high.
  • Ritarita got loose on a breakaway in the 32nd minute, but a high shot kept the match scoreless.
  • Maryland attempted another corner in the 36th minute, leading to Cisse's first-career goal.
  • Mack made his first save in the 42nd minute and his second in the 44th to keep the match scoreless into the half.
  • Madore scored his first goal of the season in the 51st minute to knot the contest.

Numbers to Know:
  • 2: The Terps are 2-0 in Big Ten play for a second straight season.
  • 4: Maryland drew with PSU for the fourth time in the Sasho Cirovski era and is now 10-6-5 against Penn State during his tenure.
  • 7: Maryland is unbeaten through its first seven matches for the first time since 2021.
  • 2018: The Terps took down the Nittany Lions for the first time since 2018.
Cirovski's Takeaways:
  • "I have very mixed feelings with today's match. Very proud of the team to come back and get a tie and really push for the win in the last few seconds. Really gritty performance by our guys late in the game."
  • "Lasse's a warrior. I think he felt badly that he was partially at fault for allowing their second goal. There was no one else we wanted with the ball at that point, and he executed it beautifully."
  • "We had to change formations when we realized we had the red card, but we still pushed for the win. We didn't change how we wanted to play, we just asked everyone to give an extra 10%."
  • "We're still in September. We're still growing. We're still developing. Tonight, we fell a bit short of our standard, but in the end, we found a way to get a point on the road, so we'll take that as a positive."
Up Next:
  • The Terps return to College Park to take on Northwestern on Sept. 26. The match will highlight Maryland's international student-athletes, start at 7 PM and air on B1G+.
