IOWA CITY, IOWA — Maryland (7-4, 0-1 Big Ten) volleyball fell for just the second time in the month of September as Iowa (10-3, 1-0 Big Ten) dealt the Terps a three-set loss (17-25, 20-25, 26-28) on Thursday night.
Olivia Ruy and
Haley Melby led the Terps with 12 and nine kills, respectively.
Ajack Malual added a pair of aces to her season total while
Ally Williams recorded six digs in the loss. Each set was closer than the last, with the final set featuring several ties, but the Hawkeyes were victorious in each frame for their eighth sweep of the season.
How it Happened:
Set 1:
- An Iowa attack error started the match, putting Maryland up, 1-0.
- An Iowa ace put the Hawkeyes ahead, 6-4.
- A 5-1 Iowa run gave the Hawkeyes a 10-4 lead.
- The Terps responded with a 3-0 run of their own to make it a 10-7 deficit.
- Iowa used another 3-0 run to take a 13-7 lead.
- Kills from Malual and Melby worked to close the gap.
- Maryland took advantage of a trio of Iowa errors to trim the deficit to 19-14.
- A pair of kills from Ruy gave the Terps their 15th and 17th points of the set.
- Iowa took the opening set 25-17.
Set 2:
- Back-to-back kills from Ruy helped UMD open a 4-1 lead.
- Following an Iowa rally, a kill from Malual evened the set at 6-6.
- The Hawkeyes used a 7-2 run to take a 13-8 advantage.
- Ruy's seventh kill brought Maryland back within five, 15-10.
- Ruy delivered the Terps' first ace in a 5-1 run to cut the Iowa lead to 16-14.
- An Iowa ace put the Hawkeyes ahead, 20-16.
- An ace from Melby gave Maryland its 20th point of the set.
- Iowa ended the second set on an 8-4 run to win the frame, 25-20.
Set 3:
- Maryland opened up a 3-1 lead.
- A kill from Melby kept the Terps up, 8-6.
