Volleyball Wins Four-Set Battle With UMBC To Cap Undefeated Weekend

The Terps won the match's final three sets to win their third match in three days.

Box Score BALTIMORE, MD - The Terps (3-2) won their third match in three days as they took down UMBC in four sets (24-26, 25-23, 25-22, 28-26) on the road. 

UMBC strung a comeback in the first set to storm back and take a 26-24 set win. Maryland regrouped and took the next two sets despite facing significant deficits in both. The Terps' resiliency sent the match to a fourth set where they utilized a pair of 6-0 runs to seal their third win in as many days. 

Duru Gökçen was named Tournament MVP after her three tremendous defensive performances. She had nine kills and six blocks on Sunday. Ally Williams was also named to the All-Tournament Team. 

Each set was a battle as both teams scored at least 22 points in all four sets, but Maryland outlasted UMBC to win its third straight match and move to a winning record for the first time in 2025. 

Ajack Malual was responsible for a team-high 20.5 points while tallying 14 kills, seven digs, four aces and five block assists. Both Eva Rohrbach and Addie Canady had three aces in the win. Rohrbach had eight kills and 10 blocks, shining on both sides of the ball.

How it Happened:
Set 1:
  • A kill from Haley Melby helped Maryland erase an early 3-0 deficit and take a 4-3 lead. 
  • UMBC stormed back ahead to take a 10-7 lead.
  • Maryland took advantage of back-to-back attack errors to go up 13-12.
  • An ace from Malual put the Terps ahead 16-13. 
  • Back-to-back service aces from UMBC brought the Retrievers back within a point. 
  • Another kill from Malual put the Terps up 21-18, forcing UMBC to take a timeout.
  • UMBC stormed back to tie the set at 23-23.
  • A 4-0 run from the Retrievers put them up 24-23 and prompted a Maryland timeout. 
  • Malual knotted her seventh kill of the set to tie it back up at 24-24.
  • UMBC took the first set with a 26-24 win.
Set 2:
  • The Retrievers jumped out to a 5-2 lead, but back-to-back attack errors brought the Terps back within one before Melby tied the set with an ace. 
  • UMBC committed another pair of attack errors as Maryland evened the set at 8-8.
  • A 3-0 run from UMBC put the Retrievers up 13-9 as the Terps took a timeout. 
  • The Retrievers used a timeout as Maryland strung together a 4-0 run to bring the set back within one point. 
  • UMBC took another timeout after three straight attack errors but Maryland back on top 20-19. The Retrievers finished with 11 attack errors in the second set. 
  • Maryland went ahead 23-21 in the second set.
  • An ace from Malual capped off a 25-23 win in the second set.
  • The Terps had three aces in the second set. 
Set 3:
  • UMBC stormed out to a 5-1 lead. It grew to an 8-4 advantage before Maryland used a timeout. 
  • A kill from Rohrbach evened the set at 9-9 as the Terps rallied. 
  • Malual's 12th kill of the match put the Terps up 13-11.
  • The two squads battled to a 17-17 tie.
  • An ace from Rohrbach followed by her sixth kill put Maryland up 22-19 and forced UMBC to take a timeout. 
  • A kill from Melby sealed a 25-22 set win for the Terps.
  • Maryland posted five blocks in the third set.
Set 4:
  • UMBC took a 7-4 lead out of the gate in the set with a slew of kills.
  • The Retrievers strung together a 6-0 run to take an 11-4 lead. 
  • Maryland surged back with a 6-0 run of its own to come back within one and force a UMBC timeout. 
  • An ace from  Canady finished another 6-0 Maryland run and caused the Retrievers to spend another timeout as the Terps went up 17-13.
  • UMBC took advantage of Maryland errors to knot the set back up at 19-19.
  • Another ace from Canady put Maryland on the brink of victory with a 24-23 lead. 
  • UMBC knotted the set at 25-25, extending the match. 
  • An ace from Malual sealed the 28-26 set win for the Terps.

Numbers to Know:
  • 3: Maryland has won three matches in three days for the third time in as many seasons (Sept. 6-8 2024, Sept. 8-10 2023).
  • 6: The Terps had six aces in the fourth set.
  • 10: Rohrbach had 10 blocks in the win.
  • 14: Malual led the team with 14 kills. 
  • 15: The Terps improved to 15-1 all-time against UMBC with their win on Sunday.
  • 19: Maryland had 19 blocks as a team.
