Biography

A multi-dimensional quarterback who transferred from the University of Florida at the end of the 2005 season ... enters the fall No. 3 on the depth chart at quarterback ... sat out 2006 due to NCAA transfer rules and did not play during 2007 ... an excellent runner with a live arm ... earned Iron Terp status for the first time in his career during spring 2008 testing ... posted the 26th-highest strength index on the team last spring.

As a Sophomore (2007): Ruled ineligible prior to the season opener and did not see game action ... did practice with the team ... competed with Jordan Steffy and Chris Turner for the No. 1 signal-caller job in the preseason ... hit on 20 of 36 passes for 231 yards with one TD and two picks in three spring scrimmages ... connected on 5 of 12 passes for 104 yards, including a 68-yard TD to Darrius Heyward-Bey, in the Red-White Spring game.

As a Redshirt Freshman (2006): Sat out due to NCAA transfer rules ... earned the Terps' offensive scout team player of the year award ... set QB school record for the 40-yard dash time (4.53) in spring testing.

As a Freshman (2005 at Florida): Saw action in six of 11 games ... decided to transfer prior to the Gators' trip to the Outback Bowl ... was 6 of 11 for 81 yards with no touchdowns and one interception on the season ... the team's fourth-leading rusher with 24 carries for 163 yards (5.6 avg.) ... led the Gators in rushing twice (at Kentucky and vs. Wyoming) ... top passing day was a 3-for-5 performance for 45 yards against Mississippi State ... season-high rushing day saw him carry the ball eight times for 59 yards at Kentucky ... career-high 29-yard carry to the 1-yard line set up a DeShawn Wynn touchdown.

At William Howard Taft High School: A three-year letterwinner who threw for 2,294 yards and 36 touchdowns with only seven interceptions ... he also ran for 865 yards with 13 rushing TDs ... as a junior, he threw for 1,881 yards with 21 touchdowns while rushing for 245 yards and three touchdowns ... an all-state selection as a senior ... was also league offensive player of the year and first team all-city in Los Angeles ... rated the fifth-best dual threat quarterback in the country by Scout.com ... coached by Troy Starr.

Personal: Mother is Patricia Portis ... cousin of Washington Redskins running back Clinton Portis ... an American studies major.
