Maryland Holds Off Tar Heels' Challenge, 12-11
Second-ranked men's lacrosse stays undefeated.
March 21, 1998
CHAPEL HILL, N.C.--The ninth-ranked University of North Carolina men's
lacrosse team remained the most snakebitten team in the country Saturday
afternoon, dropping a heartbreaking 12-11 decision to the second-ranked Maryland
Terrapins before 502 fans at Navy Field on the UNC campus. A goal by
Maryland's Scott Hochstadt with 6:57 remaining in the third quarter broke an 8-8
tie and put the Terrapins ahead for good. The Terrapins maintained a two-goal
lead for most of the final 22 minutes of the game although Carolina did cut the
lead to one goal on three different occasions, the last with 1:27 to play on a
goal by freshman Jeff Sonke, assisted by Matt Crofton.
Carolina got the ball back on the ensuing faceoff but Justin Bowman's shot was
save by the Terrapins' Kevin Healey. The Terps were then able to maintain
possession and run out the clock to avoid what would have been the biggest upset
so far of the 1998 college lacrosse season.
The Terrapins are now 6-0
overall and 2-0 in the ACC. Carolina fell to 2-4 overall and 0-2 in the ACC. The
Tar Heels will play host to Dartmouth on Tuesday in Chapel Hill at 7:30 p.m. at
Fetzer Field in its next contest. The Terrapins will play the third-ranked
Virginia Cavaliers at 2 p.m. next Saturday at Byrd Stadium in College Park, Md.
After the Terps jumped off to a 2-0 lead 5:30 into the game, Carolina
responded by scoring four goals in a row to lead 4-2 with 12:05 left in the
second quarter. Bowman had three of the Tar Heels' four goals in that run. After
UNC's lead grew to 6-3, the Terrapins scored four goals in the last 4:06 of the
first half to take control of the game. Senior attackman Andrew Whipple had two
goals and one assist in that span.
Goals by Billy Walsh and Chase Martin
in the first 3:48 of the third quarter gave Carolina its last lead of the game
at 8-7. But Brina Zeller scored one of his three goals to tie the game with 9:33
left in the third quarter and then Hochstadt put the Terrapins up for good with
6:57 left in the period.
