COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) - Penn State coach Rene Portland wants to see balance
this season. It wasn't a problem against Maryland.
Andrea Garner had 16 points and 13 rebounds. Five players on No. 9 Penn
State scored in double figures as the Nittany Lions defeated Maryland, 91-60,
Tuesday night.
Maren Walseth scored 15 points for Penn State (2-0) while Lisa Shepherd
(14), Katrena Carr (13) and Rashana Barnes (10) also finished in double
figures. Point guard Helen Darling added nine points, nine assists and 10
rebounds.
"I do think that balance is the word," Portland said. "Balance is going
to be important for us."
"That's what makes them so special," Maryland Coach Chris Weller said.
"They really are a special team."
Garner, a 6-foot-3 senior center, dominated inside and also blocked four
shots
Penn State also shot 52 percent from the field while holding Maryland to
just 38 percent shooting.
The Nittany Lions used a 21-4 run late in the first half to take a 48-21
lead, and the Terrapins never threatened again.
"There's a top-10 team for you," Weller said. "They were excellent,
that's all I can say."
