Dec. 8, 1999
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - March? Strickland scored 15 points and Branka Bogunovic added 14 Wednesday night as Maryland outlasted cross-town rival Howard University, 65-58 in women's college basketball action.
Strickland, a sophomore guard, scored in double figures for the fourth straight game to lead the Terrapins, 5-2, to their 24th win over the Lady Bison in 25 meetings. The Maryland win avenged Howard's 18-point victory last season.
Howard, 2-5, enjoyed a 50-46 rebounding advantage and outshot the Terrapins until the game's final stages. In the end, Howard shot just 34 percent with Maryland hitting at a 35 percent clip.
The Lady Bison knotted the score at 45 with 10:07 to play and a dogfight ensued to the finish. Maryland overcame four lead changes and two tie scores the rest of the way, but took control 54- 50 on Strickland's 3-pointer with 5:33 to play. Rosita Melbourne's basket following a stolen inbounds pass gave the Terps a 56-50 cushion, and Maryland led by as many as seven, 59-52, on a free throw by Vicki Brick with 4:13 remaining - but Howard wouldn't go away.
The Bison closed within four points in the final minute, but never got closer. Sophomore center Yetta Enobakhare led Howard with 13 points and Mona Gail Baker had 10. Bogunovic had a game-high 16 rebounds for the Terrapins to boast her third double-double of the season.
Maryland concludes an eight-game homestand when the Terps host Robert Morris on Saturday, Dec. 11 at 2 p.m.
