Virginia Advances to NCAA Championship Game

Conor Gill's five goals pace Cavaliers to 16-11 win over Johns Hopkins.

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Freshman attackman Conor Gill (Timonium, Md.) tied his career high with five goals and junior Jay Jalbert (Huntgintgon, N.Y.) scored three goals and added one assist to propel No. 3 seed Virginia (12-3) to a 16-11 victory over No. 2 seed Johns Hopkins (11-3) in the NCAA men's lacrosse semifinals at Byrd Stadium. Gill scored all five of his goals in the first quarter to boost the Cavaliers to an insurmountable 9-3 lead after the first 15 minutes. Gill also scored five first-quarter goals against Rutgers on March 16, 1999.

Virginia advances to the NCAA Finals vs. Syracuse on Monday at 10:55 a.m., at Byrd Stadium. Syracuse defeated Georgetown, 13-9, in the first semifinal today. The game will be televised live on ESPN.

Gill's goal scoring-spree began with 5:36 elapsed in the first quarter. He scored to put Virginia up 4-1 (5:36 elapsed), 5-1 (6:29 elapsed), 6-1 (6:39 elapsed), 8-1 (7:31 elapsed) and 9-2 (8:44 elapsed). Gill entered the game with 16 goals; he now has 21 goals and is Virginia's second-leading goal scorer this season.

With the score tied 1-1, Virginia scored seven unanswered goals in a span of 3:22. Senior midfielder Matt O'Kelly scored for Johns Hopkins with 8:32 remaining to make the score 8-2. Senior attackmen Tucker Radebaugh (Glen Arm, Md.), sophomore midfielder Hanley Holcomb (Ridgewood, N.J.) and Jelbert also scored first-half goals.

Junior attackman Dan Denihan (Manhasset, N.Y.) led Johns Hopkins with a season-high tying five goals. Denihan added two assists to total a game-high seven points. Junior midfielder A.J. Haugen (Bethpage, N.Y.) scored two goals and added two assists while senior midfielder Matt O'Kelly (Manhasset, N.Y.) scored one goal and added two assists.

Virginia goalie Derek Kenney (Stony Brook, N.Y.) recorded a career-high 15 saves. Johns Hopkins' Brian Carcaterra (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) recorded 11 stops.
