Jan. 27, 2000
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Sophomore guard March? Strickland scored 15 points and sophomore forward Deedee Warley pitched-in 14 as Maryland defeated St. Bonaventure 71-55 in a non-conference women's basketball game Thursday evening at Cole Field House.
Strickland shot 6 of 14 from the floor and added a pair of 3-pointers to lead the Terrapins to their 12th victory of the season, doubling their win total from a 6-21 season in 1998-99. She also matched a career-high with nine rebounds as Maryland kept alive a streak which has seen the Terps go 19 games this season without consecutive losses. Last year's team began the season 0-9.
Maryland (12-7) took control of the contest early by limiting St. Bonaventure (8-10) to just 19 points in the opening period. Maryland led 23-16 with 4:16 to play in the first half, but ran off nine straight points and outscored the Bonnies 11-3 the rest of the half to boast a 34-19 advantage at the intermission. Maryland led by as many as 20 in the second half, and the Bonnies never drew closer than 12.
Strickland, who collected seven rebounds in the first half, helped Maryland to a 43-32 rebounding edge that proved critical. St. Bonaventure (46.2 percent) outshot Maryland (39.4 percent) from the field, but 17 Terrapin steals resulted in 29 turnovers, and combined with 20 offensive rebounds, Maryland repeatedly got extra chances.
Courtney Mattingly led the Bonnies with 12 points. Matching Strickland's nine rebounds was freshman guard Renneika Razor. Warley dominated the inside with eight rebounds including seven on the offensive end. Freshman Vicki Brick added 10 points, six assists and five steals.
The Terrapins return to action in the Atlantic Coast Conference on Sunday, with a 1 p.m. tipoff at North Carolina. St. Bonaventure travels to LaSalle for a noon tipoff on Sunday.
