Terp Women Get Sixth-Straight With 56-44 Win Over UMBC

Dec. 2, 2000
College Park, Md. - The University of Maryland women's basketball team overpowered UMBC 56-44 to continue its best start since the 1991-92 season. The Terps, now 6-0, were paced by forwards junior Deedee Warley (Fort Washington, Md.) and junior transfer Jamecca Harrell (Oxon Hill, Md.). For Warley, the 14 point-10 rebound effort marked her fifth double-double of the year in six games. Harrell's 10 point-11 rebound game was her first career double-double since transferring to Maryland from Independence Junior College this season. The loss drops UMBC to 2-3 on the year.
The Terps struck first just 16 seconds into the game on a March? Strickland (Kingston, Mass.) jumper and never relinquished the lead to the young Retriever team. Maryland led by as much as 17 points with 17:21 remaining in the game, and held on for the eventual 12-point win. Maryland's defense kept UMBC to just 44 points, equaling the lowest point total allowed by the Terps this season against Wagner on Nov. 25. Maryland's stingy defensive effort also marked the fourth game in six outings that the Terps have allowed 55 or less points, including three with 50 points or below for their opponent. Maryland also held the Retrievers to just 27% shooting for the game.
Maryland placed three players in double figures: Warley, Harrell, and Strickland, who had 11 points. For UMBC, Jessie Brown and Shalayna Johnson had 12 and 11 points, respectively. Terrapin freshman Kiki Wimbush (Suitland, Md.) dished eight assists to just one turnover in 22 minutes. Harrell added three blocks.
The Terrapins travel to No. 11 Penn State Tuesday to continue their nonconference schedule at 7 p.m. in the Bryce Jordan Center. Maryland then heads to Chapel Hill on Saturday, Nov. 9, to meet conference-foe North Carolina for a December ACC tilt to heat up the action. That game is set for a 2 p.m. tip-off.
