Terps Resume Spring Drills

Terps Resume Spring Drills

March 27, 2000

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - After a week off for spring break, Maryland's 2000 football team resumes spring practice this week. The Terps have nine of the 15 allowable practice dates remaining, with three workouts scheduled for each of the next three weeks. Maryland will conclude spring practice with its annual Red-White game in Byrd Stadium on Friday evening, April 14.

Season Tickets Now Available For Purchase

Season tickets for Maryland's 2000 home football season are now available for purchase through the Terrapin Ticket Office.

The Terps, who came within one victory of advancing to a bowl game in 1999, are slated to play six games at Byrd Stadium this coming season, including a special Thursday night matchup against defending national champion Florida State. Maryland also plays host to ACC foes Wake Forest, NC State and Georgia Tech and non-conference opponents Temple and Middle Tennessee State.

Season tickets for the Terps' six-game home slate are $138 for adults and $90 for youths. The most economical package is the Family Four Pack, which allows four family members a season ticket in a particular area of the stadium at a season rate of $168.

Single-game tickets for home games remain at $23 for adults and $15 for youths, ages 18 and under.

Additionally, fans may purchase specially-discounted group tickets for corporate outings, parties, youth teams or leagues, church groups, or any other association or group. Group tickets are available for any of Maryland's six home games at the following rates: $18 per ticket for groups of 20 or more, $15 per ticket for groups of 50 or more, and $12 per ticket for groups of 100 or more.

Three of Maryland's six home opponents played in bowl games last year - Florida State (Sugar), Georgia Tech (Gator) and Wake Forest (Aloha).

Fans may contact the Terrapin Ticket Office at 301-314-7070 or 800-462-TERP to place an order or seek further ticket information.

Spring Game and FanFest Set For April 14

Maryland's annual Red-White game will take place Friday, April 14 at 7:30 p.m. in Byrd Stadium. Admission is free. Prior to the Terps' spring-ending scrimmage, fans are encouraged to join the team on the field for autographs, pictures and other activities from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Fans are encouraged to bring their own camera.

15 Starters Among 37 Returning Lettermen

Maryland returns 37 lettermen - including 15 starters - from its 1999 squad, which just missed earning the program's first bowl bid since 1990. On offense, key returnees among seven returning starters include tailback LaMont Jordan (Forestville, Md.), who finished fifth nationally in rushing last year, three-year starting fullback Matt Kalapinski (Marshfield, Mass.), center Melvin Fowler (Wheatly Heights, N.Y.), who has started every game the past two seasons, and wide receivers Guilian Gary (Horseheads, N.Y.) and Jason Hatala (Centreville, Va.), who combined for 35 receptions last year. Six starters are back on defense, including outside linebacker Aaron Thompson (Baltimore, Md.), who is chasing the school's career record for TFL's, free safety Shawn Forte (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.), who had four interceptions last season, and linebacker Marlon Moore (Brandywine, Md.), who ranked second in the ACC in total tackles in 1999.

NFL Draft Slated For April 15-16

The annual National Football League draft will take place April 15-16. Former Terps expected to be drafted or sign free agent contracts include cornerback Lewis Sanders (Staten Island, N.Y.), defensive tackle Delbert Cowsette (Cleveland, Ohio), cornerback Renard Cox (Richmond, Va.), offensive linemen Brad Messina (Bogota, N.J.) and Jamie Wu (St. Charles, Ill.), receiver Jermaine Arrington (Landover, Md.), defensive lineman Peter Timmins (Staten Island, N.Y.), tight end John Waerig (Philadelphia, Pa.) and cornerback Bryn Boggs (Downingtown, Pa.). Terps At A Glance

QB - Last year's starter, Calvin McCall, reports to camp this week following the conclusion of the men's basketball season, where he saw time as a reserve guard. He will join sophomore Latrez Harrison and JC transfer Shaun Hill, who have shared snaps in his absence.

TB - LaMont Jordan, with 3,227 career yards, enters his senior season as the nation's leading active rusher.

FB - The Terps return a three-year starter in unheralded Matt Kalapinski, whose blocking has been instrumental in Jordan's success over the past three years.

OL - Three starters return on the offensive front: junior center Melvin Fowler, sophomore tackle Matt Crawford, and sophomore guard Todd Wike. The Terps must replace second-team All-ACC selections in tackle Brad Messina and guard Jamie Wu.

TE - Junior Matt Murphy moves back to tight end after playing on the defensive line as a backup last year, but will miss spring drills after offseason surgery. Redshirt freshman Jeff Dugan is a player to watch at this position.

WR - Maryland returns four of their top five wideouts, including Guilian Gary (team-high 24 receptions in '99) and senior Jason Hatala. DL - Terps must replace three starters who combined for 77 career starts.

LB - Maryland's all-sophomore linebacker crew from '99 returns intact for 2000, led by outside linebacker Aaron Thompson and inside backer Marlon Moore. Kevin Bishop underwent offseason knee surgery after getting injured in the ninth game last season.

DB - The key loss in the secondary was cornerback Lewis Sanders, who decided to forego his final season of eligibility and declared for the NFL draft. Free safety Shawn Forte is back after picking off four passes in 1999.

PK - Brian Kopka, who connected on 16 field goals, is a candidate for the Lou Groza Award as the nation's top kicker.

P - Sophomore Brooks Barnard returns after earning third team Freshman All-America honors last season.
