DURHAM, N.C. -- Senior Candyce DeLoatch (Pittsgrove, N.J.) advanced to Saturday's finals in
the 200 meters and the 400 meters to pace the University of Maryland women's track team after the first
day of competition at the ACC Outdoor Championships on Friday.
DeLoatch, the school record-holder in the 400, recorded times of 24.26 and 54.06 in the 200 and
400, respectively. Her time in the 200 was the third best of the qualifying round and her time in the 400
was the second best of the preliminaries. The top eight times advance in each event.
Also faring well for the women's team was senior Stacey Minott (Greenburg, N.Y.), who qualified
in the 100 with a mark of 11.84. The time was the third best of the preliminaries. In addition, sophomore
Thema Napier (Columbia, Md.) qualified with the fourth-fastest time in the 100 hurdles (14.22), and
freshman Tia Burley (Baltimore, Md.) notched the fourth-best time in the 400 (54.58, a personal record).
Freshman Natalie Dye (Myersville, Md.) took seventh place in the finals of the pole vault
competition with a mark of 10-10, an outdoor best for Dye.
In men's action, junior Cedrick Rogers (Fort Wayne, Ind.) placed fifth in the finals of the long
jump competition with a leap of 23-6. Senior John Carr (Washington, D.C.) qualified for Saturday's finals
in the 100 with a time of 10.84, the seventh best of the qualifying round.
In addition, sophomore Phillip Barrett (Upper Marlboro, Md.) and senior Jason Joubert
(Rockville, Md.) narrowly missed qualifying in the 110 hurdles and the 400, respectively. Each earned the
ninth-best time in the qualifying round of his respective event, with Joubert missing eighth place by only
.01 seconds.
The finals of most of the running events and field events will be held tomorrow. Competition
begins at 9 a.m. and concludes at 6 p.m.
