Women's Track Jumps Six Spots To Finish Third At ACC Championships

DURHAM, N.C. -- Junior Vanessa Jones (Olney, Md.) won the ACC Championship in the high jump with a leap of 6-0 to lead the University of Maryland women's track team to a third-place finish at the ACC Outdoor Championships on Saturday.
Jones, whose previous career best was 5-11 ľ, improved on her NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 5-11 ľ. The automatic mark is 6-0 ľ.
In addition, senior Candyce DeLoatch (Pittsgrove, N.J.) finished second in the 400 (53.21) and third in the 200 (24.20), earning All-ACC honors in both events. DeLoatch, who narrowly missed breaking her own school record in the 400 (53.16), improved on her NCAA provisional qualifying time in that event. The automatic standard is 52.20.
Also earning All-ACC honors for the Terps were senior Stacey Minott (Greenburg, N.Y.), who placed third in the 100 with a time of 11.97, sophomore Tracy Ojeniyi (Sewell, N.J.), who placed third in the shot put with a mark of 46-10 ľ, and the 4x100 (third, 45.97) and 4x400 (second, 3:41.79) relay teams. The top three finishers in each event earn all-conference accolades.
In addition, sophomore Thema Napier (Columbia, Md.) placed fourth in the 400 hurdles with a time of 59.99, and freshman Tia Burley (Baltimore, Md.) finished fourth in the 200 with a mark of 54.21.
Florida State won the meet, followed by North Carolina and Maryland. The third-place finish for the Terps was the team's highest in 13 years.
In men's action, senior John Carr (Washington, D.C.) placed sixth in the 100 with a time of 10.96. The 4x400 relay team took fifth with a time of 3:15.00, while the 4x100 relay team finished sixth with a mark of 42.55. The men's team placed ninth.
Clemson won the meet, followed by Florida State and North Carolina State.
The Terps will be in action again next weekend, as both the men and the women will take part in one of the nation's largest competitions, the Penn Relays, from April 27-29.
