Track Teams Turn In Strong Performances At Georgia, George Mason

Maryland's track teams split up on Saturday to compete at the Georgia Invitational in Athens, Ga., and the George Mason Invitational in Fairfax, Va.
Senior Candyce DeLoatch (Pittsgrove, N.J.) won the 400 in 53.97 and sophomore Thema Napier (Columbia, Md.) won the 400 hurdles in 59.59 to lead the Terps at the Georgia Invitational. DeLoatch's victory was her third of the outdoor season in the 400. The victory for Napier was her seventh of the season in hurdling events.
Also faring well for the women at Georgia was junior Vanessa Jones (Olney, Md.), who placed second in the high jump with a mark of 5-9 ľ. In addition, senior Stacey Minott (Greenburg, N.Y.) took fifth in the 100 with a time of 11.86 and freshman Tia Burley (Baltimore, Md.) finished fourth in the 400 with a mark of 55.53.
On the men's side, senior Jason Joubert (Rockville, Md.) placed second in the 400 hurdles with a time of 52.81, only .07 off his season best in that event. Also, junior Cedrick Rogers (Fort Wayne, Ind.) took second place in the long jump with a leap of 23-11 ľ.
Freshmen Labelle Hillgrove (Passaic, N.J.) and Angie Rosamilia (Parsippany, N.J.) finished 1- 2 in the discus, and sophomore Ruth Kura (Potomac, Md.) won the hammer to lead the Maryland contingent at the George Mason Invitational. Hillgrove's mark of 141-4 was a Maryland season best. Rosamilia's mark of 131-10 ˝ was a personal record, while Kura's throw of 152-1 tied a personal record.
In addition, freshman Natalie Dye (Myersville, Md.) took third in the pole vault with a mark of 10- 4, and freshman Rashida Twiggs (Blue Bell, Pa.) placed seventh in the 100 (12.60) and eighth in the 200 (25.52).
In men's action, sophomores Andrew Long (Columbia, Md.) and James Gondak (Doylestown, Pa.), as well as freshman John Collins (Clarksburg, Md.) finished 1-2-3 in the hammer. They had marks of 149-10, 148-0, and 136-3, respectively. Long placed fourth in the shot put (46-2 ˝) as well.
In addition, sophomore Donate Bugg (Newport News, Va.) finished second in the 110 hurdles (14.55) and sophomore Phillip Barrett (Upper Marlboro, Md.) took third (14.69) in the same event. Also, Dave Benaderet (Baltimore, Md.) placed fifth in the 400 with a time of 49.14.
The Terps will be in action again next Saturday at the James Madison Last Chance Invitational in Harrisonburg, Va.
