The Maryland Terrapin men's soccer team opened up their season with a 1-0 win tonight over St. John's at the Maryland/FILA Preseason Kick-off Classic. The Terps' were lifted to victory by freshman Seth Stammler's (Gahanna, Ohio) goal just 18:30 in the game. Virginia and Georgetown played to a scoreless tie in the opening game of the preseason tournament.
One of Virginia's best chances to score came in the first half when Sheldon Barnes just missed with a header off the crossbar. Both Kyle Singer and David Comfort took a half in goal for the Cavs. Virginia plays St. John's tomorrow at 5 p.m. on the second day of the preseason tournament.
Georgetown will meet Maryland to end the tournament on Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. 492 Terrapin fans watched the Terps' A.J. Herrera (Albuquerque, N.M.) find Stammler for the Terrapin goal. The Terps start the regular season on Sept. 1 at the Virginia/Coca-Cola Classic against Jacksonville at 5 p.m. Maryland returns home for its opener against No. 1 Indiana in the Maryland/FILA Classic on Sept. 8 at 7:30 p.m.
