Women's Hoops Loses To Dayton, 56-53

The University of Dayton women's basketball team knocked off #25 Maryland (USA TODAY/COACHES), 56-53, on Wednesday evening at the UD Arena for their first win of the season. Stefanie Miller (Beavercreek, OH) led the Flyers with 16 points. This is the first time the Flyers have knocked off a ranked team since head coach Jaci Clark took over in 1998.The Flyers jumped out to an early 4-0 lead but Maryland used an 11-2 run to take a five point lead at the 13:26 mark. UD regained the lead, 14-13, on a Kristy Hineline (Toronto, Ontario) layup but the Terrapins rallied again to take a 20-17 edge with :47 remaining in the first stanza. A three-point play by Hineline tied the game at 20 going into intermission.

The second half featured nine lead changes and eight ties eith Maryland (3-2) jumping out to a four point lead on three occasions. Trailing 51-49 with 2:20 left to play, Sarah Schloss (Cincinnati, OH) nailed her first three pointer of the season to give the Flyers the lead for good at 52-51.

Despite 21 turnovers, the Flyers shot 46% from the floor while holding the Terrapins to 35%.

Heather Haselman (Kalida, OH) posted her first career double double with career highs of 12 points and 11 boards. Hineline added 11 points. Deedee Warley led Maryland with 19 points and eight rebounds.

UD (1-3) travels to take on Minnesota on Saturday, December 1 in Minneapolis.
