COLLEGE PARK, Md. - -
The Maryland women's basketball team (4-2) used 20-point efforts from March? Strickland (Kingston, Mass.) and Deedee Warley (Fort Washington, Md.) to earn a commanding 79-70 win over visiting Richmond (2-5) Sunday afternoon on Allfirst Court at Cole Field House.
Richmond held the lead for the opening four minutes of play until a 3-pointer by Strickland put the Terps ahead 12-10. The senior shooter would go 2-4 from beyond the arc and register 10 points to pace Maryland in the first half. Maryland never relinquish the advantage again, leading by as many as 13 before the half.
Richmond wouldn't go away, though. Ebony Tanner and Michele Koclanes combined for 23 second-half points for the Spiders, and drew Richmond within three with 43 seconds remaining on a pair of made free throws by Koclanes. The Terps handled the press well down the stretch and executed with precision from the free throw line, led by Warley who was 10-12.
Maryland's Rennieka Razor (New York, N.Y.) joined Strickland (22 points) and Warley (20 points) in the offensive effort, posting double-digits in the scoring column with 14. Tanner recorded her second double-double of the season, netting 15 points and grabbing 11 rebounds.
The Terrapins host ACC rival Clemson Wednesday on Allfirst Court at Cole Field House. The conference opener for both teams, that game starts at 7:30 p.m. Richmond visits cross town rival Virginia Commonwealth Wednesday at 2:30 p.m., and rounds out its three-game road stint at No. 24 North Carolina on Sat., Dec. 8.
