Box Score

Maryland played to a second-place finish at the Torneo Cancun de Basquetbol, losing 71-56 to Alabama on Saturday night in Cancun, Mexico.

The Terps posted four players in double figures, led by Marche Strickland who had 13. Scoring was sluggish on both teams' parts in the opening minutes. The Terps managed as much as an eight-point led in the first half and entered the break up four points, 29-25.

Strickland paced the Terps' first-half efforts just like she did in the opening round, and had 11 points by halftime. Alabama had tied the score at 34 by the first media timeout and the game was tight until Maryland went on a three-minute scoring drought down the stretch.

The Tide capitalized, with Sparkle Smith and LaNisha Cartwell, who scored nine points in the final two minutes, leading the charge. The 12-2 run in the final two minutes secured the victory and the tournament championship for Alabama.

Marche Strickland and Jamecca Harrell were both named to the all-tournament team. Strickland had a game-high 13 points, while Harrell had 10 points and five rebounds. Deedee Warley and Crystal Washington also had 10 points each on the game. Maryland's next game will be Dec. 28 against UMBC at Allfirst Court at Cole Field House. Gametime is 7:30 p.m
