DURHAM, N.C. (AP) - Alana Beard scored 16 of her 23 points in the second
half as No. 4 Duke overcame a sluggish start to beat Maryland 75-54 on Thursday
night.
Georgia Schweitzer added six points and a game-high eight assists for the
Blue Devils (23-2, 11-2 Atlantic Coast Conference), who clinched at least a
share of the ACC regular-season crown. The win was the 199th career victory for
Duke head coach Gail Goestenkors.
Duke scored on its first seven possessions in the second half to turn a
26-26 halftime tie into a 42-31 lead with 16:07 remaining. Beard scored eight
points in a five-minute span later in the half to push the lead to 66-46 with
2:40 left.
The Blue Devils hit 19 of 35 shots in the second half, rebounding from an
11-for-32 effort in the first half against Maryland's zone defense.
Beard shot 11-fof-18 from the field and had seven steals.
Marche Strickland scored 16 points and Deedee Warley added 16 for Maryland
(15-9, 6-7), which lost its third straight.
The Terrapins committed 15 turnovers in the first half, 14 in the last 10
minutes of the half. But Maryland offset those miscues by outrebounding Duke
20-11 in the half.
