Women's Lacrosse - 'Aussie Connection' Comes Up Big At Penn State

March 30, 2001
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Behind a sensational performance from two-time consensus Player of the Year Jen Adams, the No. 1 Maryland women's lacrosse team defeated No. 13 Penn State 14-8 as part of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge at Bigler Field in University Park, Pa. The Terrapins (8-0) got a 10 point day (7 goals, 3 assists) from their premier player whose seven goals were a career high.
Penn State struck first in the contest as Katie Jeschke found the back of the net off of a pass from Colleen O'Hara. Kate Affonsa put in another goal for the Nittany Lions three minutes later, as PSU took a 2-0 advantage. Then Adams took the game over, scoring five goals and assisting on three others to close out the first half of play. PSU's Jeschke had a first half hat trick and the Lions got a goal from B.J. Lucey but Penn State trailed 8-5 at the break.
In the second half, PSU got on the board first with an O'Hara score, but another Adams goal gave the Terps back their three goal margin. Down the stretch, Maryland began to pull away, as Adams found the back of the net again, as did Courtney Hobbs, Sonia Judd and Allison Comito. Penn State countered with a pair of goals from Lucey and Jeschke, both off O'Hara assists, but the rally fell short and the Terps took the game 14-8.
For Maryland, Hobbs had three goals and an assist and Judd and Comito had a pair of scores apiece. All told, the "Aussie Connection" of Adams, Hobbs and Judd accounted for 12 of the Terrapins' 14 goals (86 percent).
Penn State goalie Megan Ames (Alexandria, Va.) had a great day between the pipes, stopping 16 Maryland scoring opportunities. Sophomore Alexis Venechanos had seven saves for the Terps.
Both teams compete Sunday on Bigler Field as Penn State hosts North Carolina at 11:00 a.m. and Maryland takes on Ohio State at 2:00 p.m.
