Terps Beat No.9 William & Mary, 17-5, in Women's Lacrosse Action

April 10, 2001

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland women's lacrosse team beat the ninth-ranked Tribe of William & Mary, 17-5, today in College Park. The top-ranked Terps are now 11-0 (3-0 ACC) on the season and have won 31 consecutive games dating back to last season.

In the win, the Terrapins continued a recent trend as they jumped out early on their opponent. In today's game, Maryland scored the game's first nine goals and did not let the Tribe on the board until the 5:31 mark in the first half. Tori Wellington again got things cranked up for the Terps as she took the opening draw and raced downfield to score just 12 seconds into the game. Wellington did the same thing on Sunday against James Madison as she scored after just 14 seconds had elapsed. As a team, Maryland has outscored its opponents 20-2 in the first 20 minutes of its last three games.

In the second half, things did not change much for either team. Maryland scored the first six goals of the half and the Tribe did not find the net until 5:34 of the frame. The story of the game was Maryland's ability to hold William & Mary in check while being able to get into their own offensive set at will. The Terps shot the ball 43 times (third most in a game this season) while holding the Tribe to a paltry nine shots (fewest by a Terrapin opponent this year).

Jen Adams led the way in scoring with five goals and an assist while Wellington and Courtney Hobbs each notched hat tricks. For Hobbs, it marked the fourth straight contest that the junior standout has accomplished the feat while Wellington's trifecta was her third of the season.

Maryland is now 2-0 in its week of facing four Top 20 opponents. Next on the list is fifth-ranked Georgetown on Thursday afternoon. The Terps and Hoyas will face off at Kehoe Field on the Georgetown campus at 4:00 p.m. and Maryland will close out the week on Saturday as it will take on No. 19 Johns Hopkins in a doubleheader with the Terrapin men that begins at 5:08 p.m.
