April 12, 2001
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland women's basketball program is pleased to announce the official signing of 6-4 center Arek Deng for the 2001-02 season.
A center/power forward combination, Deng brings a wealth of international experience to the Terrapins. She was a member of England's Junior National Team last summer, and will join the squad again in the summer of 2001 to travel throughout Europe and compete against numerous international opponents.
"Arek's international experience is going to be a great asset to her transition to the college game," said Maryland head coach Chris Weller. "Arek's overall athletic ability blends in well with our up-tempo style."
Originally from Sudan, Deng's family moved to Egypt, then to London, where they reside now. She speaks three languages, including her native Dinka, and currently attends Blair Academy in Blairsville, N.J.
