Spring Football Opens With A Familiar Look

April 2, 2001

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland football team opened its first week of spring practice under Ralph Friedgen last Saturday and despite having some new faces on the team and an almost entirely new coaching staff, the first practice had a familiar look to it.

That familiar look, however, was not stationed on the field. It was instead manning the sidelines in the form of numerous Terrapin lettermen and alumni who showed up in support of Friedgen and his staff.

To usher in the official start of the Friedgen Era, former Terp players and current supporters in the Gridiron Network showed up in force for the first day of practice and the picnic that followed. Among those in attendance were former Maryland standouts Boomer Esiason, Larry Webster and J.B. Brown. The group enjoyed practice, seeing old friends at the picnic and then heading out to cheer on the Terrapin men's basketball team later that night as they played in the Final Four.

The remaining 14 practice sessions are all open to the public, but by appointment only. To attend a Maryland spring practice, simply call Karyl Henry in the football office at (301) 314-7096 and tell her you would like to be put on the list of those who wish to attend.

Note: Beginning tomorrow here on UMTerps.com, the first of a three-part series on the Terrapin football team will be posted. Each segment will be a look at the Terps as they enter spring practice, starting with the offense on Tuesday, followed by the the defense on Wednesday and ending with a look at special teams on Thursday.
