No. 1 Women's Lacrosse Team Claims 4th ACC Title In 5 Years With 15-12 Win Over Duke

April 22, 2001
ORLANDO, Fla. -
The No. 1 Maryland Terrapins (15-0) captured their fourth ACC championship in five years and third in a row, with a 15-12 win over No. 2 seed Duke (12-3) at Disney's Wide World of Sports. The six-time defending national champions have now won 35 games in a row, dating back to early in the 2000 season.
ACC Player of the Year Jen Adams (Brighton, South Australia) scored five goals and became the second player in NCAA women's lacrosse history to surpass the 400-point plateau. The two-time national player of the year now has an even 400 points, trailing only Karen Emas, who recorded 420 points at Delaware from 1981-84. Adams has 243 career goals and 157 assists, this season she has 64 goals and 39 assists for 103 points. Maryland's Quinn Carney (Flemington, N.J.) was selected as the tournament MVP after six goals and two assists in the tournament.
The Terps held off Duke several times in the second half, as the Blue Devils outscored the Terps 8-7 in the stanza. Lauren Gallagher (West Chester, Pa.) recorded all three of her goals and an assist in the half.
After Maryland built a lead as large as five at 12-7 with 17:12 left in regulation, Duke notched three straight goals in less than three minutes -- two from Gallagher -- to draw within two at 12-10 with 12:20 left in the game.
Maryland led 8-4 at halftime, as the Terps scored eight of the last 10 goals of the half including two each from Adams and Meg McNamara (East Northport, N.Y.).
After falling behind 2-0, Maryland reeled off five of the next six goals to build a 5-3 lead midway though the first half. The run started with a pair of free position goals from Adams and Allison Comito (Glen Head, N.Y.). McNamara gave the Terps their first lead 3-2, 8:53 into the first half. After Duke's Claire Sullivan (Washington, D.C.) tied the game at 3-3, Maryland got two more goals from Quinn Carney (Flemington, N.J.) and McNamara.
Duke jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on goals by Kate Kaiser (Cockeysville, Md.) -- on a free position shot -- and Kate Soulier (Chadds Ford, Pa.) just 3:20 into the game.
