Adams Lifts No. 1 Terps Over No. 5 Princeton 7-6

April 25, 2001

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The No. 1 ranked Maryland Terrapin women's lacrosse team (16-0) won a close one over No. 5 Princeton (11-3) on Wednesday night at Ludwig Field, 7-6 . Senior Jen Adams (Brighton, South Australia) netted the game-winning goal with 1:31 remaining to keep the Terps undefeated and stretch the team's winning streak to 36 straight.

Princeton came out dictating the deliberate tempo of the game, and were able to score the game's first goal just over eight minutes in when Whitney Miller found Lauren Simone for her first of two goals on the night. Terps' attacker Courtney Hobbs (West Lakes, South Australia) found the back of the net just over a minute later to tie the game for the first of four times Wednesday night.

As the first half clocked ticked away, play was scoreless for the next 13 minutes before Princeton took the lead again when Kim Smith scored the first of her game-high three goals. Senior midfielder Quinn Carney (Flemington, N.J.) knotted the game at two-all at the 4:07 mark with her first of two goals. The half ended with each team getting a late score, Princeton's coming at 35 seconds when midfielder Theresa Sherry notched her lone point of the night. Hobbs was fouled on the way to the goal and tied it up again at three on a free position shot from the right side with 23 seconds remaining in the first half.

Princeton captured its third advantage of the day just 51 seconds into the second half of play on Smith's second goal of the day. ACC Player of the Year Adams pulled the Terps even again with a free position goal at 25:17. Carney gave the Terps' their first lead of the day netting her second of the day with just over 15 minutes remaining to make it 5-4 Maryland. A free position goal from the left side capped off a three-goal run for Maryland with 13 minutes remaining.

The No. 5 Tigers weren't done, however, and got one more goal each from Simone and Smith, who had the equalizer with just 2:28 remaining in regulation. Maryland won the draw and found an isolated Adams on the left side who dodged around her defender to get the angle and deposit the game-winner in the upper righthand corner of the net past Tigers' goalie Meghan McInnes, who finished the day with seven saves. The Terps won the final draw of the game and held on for the 7-6 win.

Maryland hosts No. 4 Loyola on Saturday at 1 p.m. Saturday is "Maryland Day," so admission will be free to the game. It is also Senior Day for the defending champion Terps. Princeton hosts Brown Saturday at 3 p.m.
