Men's Team Takes Second At Terrapin Invitational

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Junior Thema Napier (Columbia, Md.) and sophomore Tia Burley (Baltimore, Md.) each won two events to lead the Maryland women's track team to victory at the Terrapin Invitational on Saturday.
The women's team finished with a team score of 293. Temple finished second with 102 points, followed by Delaware (94), Howard (65), American (52), George Mason (30), and the British Royal Navy (26).
Napier finished first in the 100 hurdles with a time of 14.24 and first in the 400 hurdles with a time of 1:00.44. Burley won the 200 meters and the 400 meters with times of 26.43 and 56.42, respectively. Also faring well for the Maryland women were a duo of throwers who each won two events, juniors Ruth Kura (North Potomac, Md.) and Tracy Ojeniyi (Sewell, N.J.). Kura won the discus with a mark of 131-8 ˝ and the hammer with a toss of 162-11 ˝. Ojeniyi took first in the shot put with a distance of 44-2 and first in the javelin with a mark of 106-11.
Other event winners for Maryland include senior Kelly Crowley (Levittown, Pa.), who won the 1,500 with a time of 4:41.72 and finished second in the 3,000 with a time of 10:24.08, senior Vanessa Jones, who won the high jump competition with a leap of 5-6, sophomore Natalie Dye (Myersville, Md.), who finished first in the pole vault with a mark of 11-5 ľ, sophomore Lynn Harris (Newark, Del.), who won the long jump with a leap of 19-3 ˝, and the 4x100 relay team, which took first with a time of 46.36.
The men's team narrowly missed winning the competition, falling to Delaware by just two points. The Blue Hens finished with 149 team points. Maryland was second with 147 points, followed by Temple (96), American (70), Howard (68), the British Royal Navy (27), and George Mason (16).
Junior Dave Benaderet (Baltimore, Md.) led the Maryland men, finishing first in the 400 with a time of 49.64 and second in the 200 with a time of 22.97. Also faring well for the Terps was senior Cedrick Rogers (Fort Wayne, Ind.), who took first in the long jump with a mark of 23-0 ľ, second in the 100 with a time of 11.47, and third in the triple jump with a leap of 39-8 ľ. In addition, junior James Gondak (Doylestown, Pa.) finished first in the shot put with a mark of 43-4 Ľ and first in the hammer throw with a toss of 170-0.
The Terps will be off next weekend and then will travel to Orlando, Fla., for the ACC Outdoor Championships on April 20-21.
