Terps Advance to Eighth Straight Title Game

May 18, 2001
BALTIMORE, Md. - The top-seeded and top-ranked University of Maryland women's lacrosse team continued its run at its seventh straight NCAA title with tonight's 14-7 win over No. 5 Princeton in the national semifinal at Johns Hopkins University. With the win, the Terrapins moved to 22-0 on the season, extended their overall win streak to 42-in-a-row, and pushed their NCAA Tournament win streak to 19 straight.
In addition to the Terps' extending their streaks, head coach Cindy Timchal tied William Smith's Pat Genovese on the all-time collegiate list for coaching wins. Maryland's victory was the 267th of Timchal's career (191 at Maryland and 76 at Northwestern) and should the Terps complete their season undefeated on Sunday, Timchal will become women's lacrosse's all-time leader as William Smith has completed their season.
In tonight's semifinal action -- a rematch of last year's national final -- the Terps started slow and came on like gangbusters. After over ten minutes of scoreless lacrosse, Princeton was the first to get on the board as Charlotte Kenworthy found the back of the net at 19:04. The Terrapins controlled the ensuing draw, however, and freshman Kelly Coppedge got the Terps on the board with her first goal of the evening. Maryland increased its lead to 2-1 at 11:11 when senior Allison Comito found Coppedge on a quick-hitter in front of the cage. The game was nip-and-tuck for the next nine-plus minutes with the Terps holding a narrow 4-3 edge with 1:46 remaining in the half.
That would change as the half drew to a close as Coppedge notched a hat trick with her third goal coming off of an assist from Jen Adams with 17 seconds left in the frame. Just 11 seconds later, Adams took a feed from Courtney Hobbs after Hobbs was awarded a free position attempt and the Terrapins would carry a 6-3 lead into the locker room.
After the intermission, the Terps took over where they left off, scoring four unanswered goals in the period's first 11 minutes. Quinn Carney led the charge as she scored three of those, the first coming on an amazing backhand with almost no angle on the right side of the goalmouth. From that point on, Maryland outscored Princeton 4-3 for the 14-7 final.
For the game, the Terps were led in scoring by Hobbs' four goals and two assists for a career-high tying six points. The four goals also tied a career high, one which was originally set in last year's final versus the Tigers. A trio of Terrapins joined in with hat tricks as Carney, Coppedge and Adams found the net three times while Adams matched Hobbs' six points as she added three assists.
Maryland will now await Georgetown, the winner of Friday night's second semifinal. The Hoyas were 10-9 come-from-behind winners over Loyola (Md.) and will now face off with the Terps at Homewood Field on Sunday at 3:10 p.m.
