NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y.- The Terrapin women's basketball team continued its winning ways on Sunday afternoon as it cruised to a 68-53 victory over Niagara University in the first meeting ever between the two schools. Sunday's contest marked the first time that an Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) school had met the Purple Eagles. Maryland moved to a perfect 2-0 on the season with the victory while Niagara fell to 0-1in the loss.
After battling back-and-forth in the first half of play, the Terps, who held an 11-point advantage at one point in the opening half, found themselves leading just 31-28 at the intermission despite shooting 50 percent (13-26) from the floor.
In the second half, the Terrapins got it done on both ends of court to extend their lead to double digits. Behind the strength of a 16-2 run, which ranged over the span of six plus minutes, the Terps extended their lead to as many as 18 points. On the defensive end of the floor the Terps were just as tough as they held the Purple Eagles to just nine second half field goals, in cruising to a 15-point victory.
Terry Daniels (Ellicott City, Md.) led the way for Maryland in the victory, shooting 6-for-7 from the field en route to scoring a game-high 18 points. Freshman Charmaine Carr (Brandywine, Md.) was a force in the middle for the Terps tallying nine points to go along with her career-high 10 rebounds while senior Renneika Razor (New York, N.Y.) added 12 points and seven rebounds in the victory. In the loss, Marisa Sirianni paced Niagara with 15 points and 11 rebounds.
The Terrapins will look to keep the momentum rolling from their 2-0 start when they play host to the Terrapin Classic on November 29 and 30 at the Comcast Center. The tournament field includes Rider, UMES, and Rhode Island. Maryland will open tournament play on Friday when it takes on Rider. Game time is set to tip-off at noon. Admission to Saturday's tournament games will be free of charge to all fans.
