COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
The University of Maryland women's lacrosse team earned its third win of the season with an impressive second half defensive effort, beating No. 9 Dartmouth College, 13-8, at Ludwig Field. The seventh-ranked Terrapins now stand at 3-3 (0-3 ACC) on the season while the Big Green fall to 2-1.
The Terps opened the game with four-straight goals, marking the first time it had opened the scoring in any game this season. Sophomore Annie Collins scored two of her career-high three goals during that stretch. As it has at times this year, however, Maryland allowed its opponents a run of its own. Dartmouth ran off the game's next four goals to knot the score at four, then the two teams traded a pair of goals before intermission for a 6-6 halftime score.
The Big Green opened the scoring in the second half as Lana Smith found the back of the net, but at that point, the Terps put the defensive clamps down. Maryland allowed just one other goal in the game's final 26-plus minutes while scoring seven of its own to turn a 7-6 deficit into an eventual 13-8 final. Down the stretch, Meredith Egan led the way with three of her game-high four goals while Cara Gorman and Alexis Venechanos combined in goal to shut down the Dartmouth attack.
Gorman got her second straight start in the game and finished with seven saves while Venechanos came on for the game's final 17 minutes and had three saves with no goals allowed.
Back on the offensive end, Sonia Judd was Maryland's second-leading scorer as she had a goal and a career-high four assists for four points. As mentioned previous, Collins had her first career hat trick while Courtney Hobbs, Kelly Coppedge and Kristie Leggio each chipped in for a goal and an assist. Hobbs has now scored at least one point in each of the last 33 games.
Maryland has now won 75 straight games against non-conference opponents (its last non-ACC loss came to Loyola in 1997).
Maryland returns to action this Saturday as it will take on Old Dominion in a 1:00 p.m. game at Ludwig Field.
