Women's Lacrosse Continues Scoring Spree Against ODU

March 23, 2002

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland women's lacrosse team earned its third-straight win, beating No. 16 Old Dominion University, 17-9, on a blustery day at Ludwig Field. The seventh-ranked Terrapins now stand at 4-3 (0-3 ACC) on the season while the Monarchs are now 6-3 (3-1 CAA).

As it has in its last two games, Maryland got on the board early and eventually cruised to victory. The Terrapins scored five times in as many minutes after the opening draw while holding ODU to just one goal to own an early 5-1 lead. In that stretch, junior Sonia Judd notched her first hat trick of the season and added an assist for four early points. For the remainder of the half, the Terps outscored the Monarchs, 6-4, to take an 11-5 lead into the half. In the half, Kelly Coppedge and Julie Shank added a pair of goals. Among Shank's goals was a scoop shot that came after Courtney Hobbs had been knocked to the ground just inside of the eight meter, but managed steered the ball in Shank's direction before hitting the ground. Shank ultimately directed the ball from the ground into the back of the net.

One of the keys to the first half was the Terrapins' draw control as freshman Acacia Walker was strong, leading Maryland to a 12-5 first half advantage.

The second half opened with the Terps continuing their scoring run as Annie Collins, Meredith Egan and Coppedge each rattled the cage to run the score to 14-5 with just over 20 minutes left, virtually putting the game on ice. The Terrapins used the opportunity to play newcomers, with Jessica Dorney (scored first career goal) and Kirah Miles (played final 10 minutes in goal) among them.

Coppedge led the way in the scoring column, tying a career high with seven points (four goals, three assists). Hobbs also tied a career high in points with seven, doing so behind a career-high six assists. The six assists ties the all-time Maryland single-game record set five other times, most recently by Jen Adams in last year's season opener versus Duke. Not to be outdone, Judd also set career highs in the game for points (6) and goals (4).

Maryland has now won 76 straight games against non-conference opponents (its last non-ACC loss came to Loyola in 1997). In addition, In their last five games, the Terrapins have scored 80 goals (an average of 16 goals per game).

The Terrapins return to action on Tuesday as it will take host Harvard in a 4:00 p.m. showdown at Ludwig Field.
