BALTIMORE, MD - The University of Maryland women's lacrosse team earned its second road win of the week, as it handed Johns Hopkins University a 13-8 defeat in front of 800 fans at Homewood Field. The 13th-ranked Terrapins are now 8-6 (0-3 ACC) on the season while the Blue Jays fall to 7-5.
With the win, Maryland head coach Cindy Timchal earned her 200th win at the University of Maryland. In 11-plus seasons, Timchal has posted an amazing 200-18 (.917) record as the Terps' mentor.
In the game, Maryland used a big run to take control of the game as it had earlier in the week against William & Mary and as it had almost a year ago in the last meeting with JHU. Hopkins jumped out to an early 1-0 lead, but the Terrapins scored the game's next eight goals to own an 8-1 lead with less than two minutes remaining in the first half. In that stretch, the Terps were paced by Sonia Judd and Courtney Hobbs -- who each had a pair of goals -- and Meredith Egan who notched a hat trick. Hopkins found the net twice in the final :37 of the half to cut the lead at intermission to five, but the damage had been done.
The Blue Jays continued to try and make a run at a comeback in the second half, scoring four of the first six goals after intermission, but the Terrapins were not to be denied.
With the score 10-7, Katie Robinson scored on an assist from Kelly Coppedge -- her career-high fourth of the day -- and that started a three-goal run for the Terps that salted the game away at 13-7 with under five minutes remaining.
Seniors Hobbs and Egan each paced Maryland in scoring with four goals with Hobbs adding a pair of assists and Egan adding one. Egan was a perfect 4-of-4 as she did not miss on a single shot she took all afternoon. Judd also finished with a hat trick on just five shots and added an assist for four points.
As a team,. Maryland outshot Johns Hopkins, 31-22, while owning a large advantage in ground balls at 36-20. The Terps also held a solid advantage on the draw, winning 13 compared to Hopkins' eight.
Maryland will now set its sights on the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament, which takes place next Friday and Sunday at Duke University in Durham, N.C. The Terps will square off in opening round action against top-seeded Virginia on Friday.
