GREENSBORO, N.C. -
The Virginia Cavaliers led the 2002 All-Atlantic
Coast Conference women's lacrosse team with four representatives as
voted upon by the league's head coaches. North Carolina and Duke had
three players named to the 12-member team while Maryland placed two
members on the squad.
Senior Courtney Hobbs and sophomore Kelly Coppedge were the pair of Terrapins honored the night before their ACC semifinal match against top-seeded Virginia.
North Carolina midfielder Christine McPike earned ACC Player of the Year
honors. McPike, a senior from Farmingdale, N.Y., has recorded 30 goals,
four assists and 22 caused turnovers this season.
Virginia's Amy Appelt took Rookie of the Year honors. Appelt, a
freshman from Garden City, N.Y., registered 36 goals and 19 assists in
helping the Cavaliers win the regular-season championship. North
Carolina head coach Jenny Slingluff Levy and Virginia head coach Julie
Myers shared ACC Coach of the Year honors.
The sixth annual ACC Women's Lacrosse Championship will be held April 19
and 21 at Duke University. Virginia will face Maryland in the first
semifinal at 1 p.m. while Duke and North Carolina play in the second
semifinal at 3:30 p.m. The Championship game will be held at 12 p.m.
Sunday.
