Fourth-seeded and 12th-ranked Maryland received four goals apiece from Courtney Hobbs and Meredith Egan as the Terrapins defeated top-seeded and third-ranked Virginia, 15-12, in the semifinals of the 2002 ACC Women's Lacrosse Tournament held on Friday afternoon at Koskinen Stadium in Durham, N.C.

The Terrapins, who avenged a 17-16 loss on March 12 to Virginia, improve to 9-6 on the season while the Cavaliers fall to 12-3. Maryland will meet the winner of Duke-North Carolina in the championship game set for Sunday at 12:00 noon.

The Terrapins, who became the first number four seed to win a game in the ACC Tournament, advance to the finals for the fifth time in the last six seasons. Maryland captured the ACC crown in 1997, 1999, 2000 and 2001.

With the score tied 3-3, Maryland used a 5-0 run to close the first half and lead 8-3 at intermission. Egan tallied back-to-back goals while Hobbs, Kelly Coppedge and Sonia Judd also scored in the spurt.

Virginia scored three straight goals in the first four minutes of the second half to pull within 8-6 on a tally by Molly Cangemi, but the Terrapins responded with a 3-0 run of their own to go ahead 11-6 when Annie Collins scored an unassisted goal at the 21:56 mark.

After the Cavaliers scored a pair of goals to make the score 11-8, the two teams traded the final eight goals of the contest.

The Maryland defense allowed just one goal on three shots by Lauren Aumiller, who entered the contest with an NCAA-leading 54 goals on the season. Terrapin goalkeeper Alexis Venechanos was credited with 11 saves on the afternoon while her counterpart, Andrea Pfeiffer, made 14 saves.

Collins added three goals on the day for the Terrapins while Acacia Walker dished out four assists. For Virginia, Cary Chasney registered four goals and one assist and Caitlin Banks added three goals and one assist.
