Terps Put a Scare in No. 1 Princeton

April 25, 2002

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland women's lacrosse team put up quite a fight against the top-ranked Princeton Tigers, but the Terps fell short, 13-9, at Class of 1952 Stadium in Princeton.

The Terrapins jumped all over the Tigers early, opening scoring with a Courtney Hobbs goal just :45 into the game and then continued an onslaught that would have the crowd sitting on its hands early on Senior Night at Princeton. Maryland got two goals apiece out of Hobbs and Sonia Judd while Annie Collins chipped in another and with just 10 minutes remaining in the first half, the Terps owned a 5-0 lead on the nation's number one team.

To its credit, however, Princeton did not give up. The Tigers stormed back, running off four goals before Collins scored her second of the half, then added three more and actually held a surprising 7-6 lead at intermission after Kim Smith found the back of the net on a free position shot with :14 left in the half. Tiger star Lauren Simone paced the attack in the comeback with two goals and a pair of assists.

The Terrapins bounced back quickly as the second half opened with a pair of goals by freshman Acacia Walker in the first 10 minutes. Charlotte Kenworthy scored for Princeton to tie the game back up, but Judd answered less than 20 seconds later to give the Terps a leg up again at 9-8. The lead at 40:12 would be Maryland's last of the night.

Princeton scored with 11:14 and 7:10 left to take a one-goal lead and play went back and forth with the game still in question. The Tigers were able to salt the game away late, however, as Simone rattled the cage twice and Mimi Hammerburg once in the last three-and-a-half minutes and Princeton would come away with a 13-9 win.

For the evening, Judd led Maryland's scorers with a hat trick and an assist. Hobbs and Walker each had two goals and an assist while Collins added a pair of goals.

Maryland will take the field again this Saturday as it will travel to Baltimore to take on Loyola at 3:00 p.m.
