COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
University of Maryland redshirt sophomore quarterback Chris Kelley had his injured right knee evaluated by the Terrapins' team physician, Dr. Leigh Ann Curl, this morning on the College Park campus. With the decrease in swelling in the knee, Dr. Curl was able to diagnose Kelley's injury -- which was suffered in Saturday's Spring Game -- as a torn anterior cruciate ligament.
Kelley will now proceed with corrective surgery.
Early indications are that Kelley will not be available to play at the start of the 2002 season and that his availability at all in '02 will be contingent on his recovery.
"After the examinations Monday morning, we learned that Chris Kelley has a tear of his anterior cruciate ligament in his knee," said head coach Ralph Friedgen. "I am very disappointed for Chris. He has worked so hard over the course of the past year to rehabilitate the injury in his other knee and this setback is a tremendous disappointment. I feel very much for him and hope for the best for a successful recovery.
"As far as a timetable is concerned for Chris and his recovery, we are not thinking about that right now," said Friedgen. "It is my hope that, for the time being, he can concentrate on his academics and ultimately be successful in rehabilitating his knee as he did before."
