April 3, 2002
COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
The University of Maryland football team will officially begin preparation for the 2002 season tomorrow, April 4th, as it opens spring practice at 4:00 p.m. at the football practice fields on campus.
The Terrapins return 15 starters (eight offense, five defense, two special teams) and 43 letterwinners (20 offense, 21 defense, two special teams) from a team that was the surprise success story of the 2001 college football season and the catalyst of Ralph Friedgen's storybook first season as the head coach at his alma mater. Maryland finished last season with a record of 10-2 (7-1 ACC), won its first Atlantic Coast Conference championship since 1985, and earned its first-ever Bowl Championship Series appearance.
The 15-practice spring session will begin with four straight days of work (Thursday through Sunday) before moving to a Tuesday/Thursday/Saturday/Sunday weekly schedule until the culmination of spring football in the form of the Red & White Game on April 27.
Spring Game Activities
The 2002 Red & White Spring Game will feature many activities for fans, but the feature item will be the unveiling of the Terrapins' new uniforms for the upcoming season. Nike has redesigned the Terps' new look and some of the new uniforms will be presented at halftime of the game.
Other activities include an autograph session with the team on the Byrd Stadium concourse level which begins at 3:00 p.m., a Sears Cup presentation which will take place just prior to the game, numerous interactive games as well as face-painting. Admission to the game is free.
Practice Coverage and Attendance
All practices, with the exception of the coaches' clinic on April 13, are open to fans and the media with prior notification.
Fans interested in attending should contact Karyl Henry in the football office at (301) 314-7096 or by e-mail at mdgridiron@hotmail.com.
