BALTIMORE - Courtney Hobbs and Sonia Judd each recorded three goals as seven-time defending National Champion Maryland defeated Loyola, 13-8, in the first round of the 2002 NCAA Division I women's lacrosse tournament held on Curley Field Thursday afternoon.
Five different Terrapins scored within the first 11 minutes of play en route to an 8-3 Maryland lead at the half. Kristie Leggio fired a shot past goalkeeper Tricia Dabrowski at the 26:50 mark, which was followed by a Meredith Egan free-position goal 48 seconds later. Annie Collins took a feed from Kelly Coppedge to increase the Terrapins lead by three at 22:59. Judd and Coppedge followed to give the Terps a 5-0 lead at the 19:41 mark. Rachel Shuck defeated two defenders behind the cage to score Loyola's first goal of the game at 18:30, which was followed by a Stacey Morlang free-position goal three minutes later. However, Maryland converted three more goals ending with a Hobbs score 29 seconds remaining in the half.
Loyola came out strong in the second half as Suzanne Eyler fired an unassisted shot past Alexis Venchanos to cut the Terps lead by four at 26:04. Morlang followed with a free-position goal at 23:50 to put the Greyhounds within three. However, Coppedge answered off a fast-break to give the Terps a 9-5 lead at 15:55. Loyola gained possession off the draw as Jaclyn Borrone found Stephanie Walker who fired a behind-the-back goal to put the Greyhounds within three again at 13:19. The Terps, however, capitalized off of Loyola's turnovers and missed shots and recorded four more goals to gain a 13-8 victory over Loyola and advance to the NCAA quarterfinals.
Less than two weeks ago, on April 27, Loyola defeated the Terrapins at Curley Field by a 7-4 score for just the second win over Maryland in program history. Loyola's defense, which is ranked first in the nation, held Maryland to just four goals, the fewest the Terps have seen since May 18, 1991 against New Hampshire. The Greyhounds' first win against the Terps came in 1997, when Loyola broke Maryland's NCAA-record 50-game winning streak. However, Maryland came back to defeat Loyola, 8-7, in the championship game of the NCAA tournament that same season.
Maryland outshot the Greyhounds, 25-22, and won 13 of 23 draw controls. Venechanos recorded 11 saves as the Terps improved to 11-9 on the season and advance to the quarterfinal round. Maryland will play Cornell on May 12.
The Greyhounds, who have made seven consecutive NCAA tournament appearances, end their season at 15-4.
