WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Led by three players in double figures, Maryland held on for the 75-73 win at Wake Forest Sunday in ACC women's basketball. A gutsy effort by the Terps leaves them 8-7 on the year and evens their conference record at 2-2. Wake Forest falls to 10-4, 1-3 in the ACC. The Terps' next action is Thursday, Jan. 16, at home vs. Florida State.
Maryland encountered some foul trouble early, when post players Charmaine Carr (Brandywine, Md.) and Delvona Oliver (Euclid, Ohio) each were whistled for two fouls by the 9:27 mark in the first half. The Terps kept it close despite suffering an almost four-minute drought without a field goal between the 8:00 and 4:08 minute marks. An Anesia Smith (Alexandria, Va.) layup ended the scoreless stretch, and sent the Terps on a 13-4 run to finish the half up three points, 37-34. Terri Daniels (Ellicott City, Md.) led the Terps' scoring efforts in the first half, netting 10 of her 15 points.
The second half was a tight one, with five lead changes and two ties. Neither team led by more than five points in the closing 20 minutes, but once Maryland took the 59-56 lead at the 5:17 mark, the Terps never looked back. A diligent effort on both ends of the court and 7-for-8 free throw shooting down the stretch by freshman guard Chrissy Fisher (Rumson, N.J.), equaled a two-point win for Maryland and the team's first ACC road win of the season.
Senior Renneika Razor (New York, N.Y.) gave Maryland an outstanding overall effort, netting a game-high 17 points and tallying five steals. Oliver notched her sixth-straight game in double figures for the Terrapins, scoring 14 points. Fisher also finished with a game-high 10 rebounds and nine points, one short of her first career double-double.
The Terps' win was their first ACC road win since Feb. 19, 2001, when UM grabbed a 69-53 win at Wake Forest.
Wake Forest was led by 15 points and eight rebounds from Tiffany Listenbee, and another 15 points from Eafton Hill.
Maryland hosts Florida State on Jan. 16 at 7 p.m. in the Comcast Center in its next action. Wake Forest meets No. 1 Duke at Cameron Indoor Stadium at 7 p.m. on Jan. 16.
