Women's Basketball Loses 76-61 To Florida State

Jan. 16, 2003
COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) - Florida State had its best shooting night of the season against Maryland, making 31 of 56 shots including 17-for-28 in the second half.
And on those few occasions when the Seminoles missed, they usually got hold of the rebound.
Throw in a torrid start and a 24-point performance by Tasheika Morris, and it's no wonder the Seminoles had an easy time defeating Maryland 76-61 Thursday night.
Morris scored 17 points in the second half, and Florida State never trailed in running past the Terrapins. The Seminoles had 23 assists and dominated the boards, 42-28.
"I think the difference for us was rebounding," FSU coach Sue Semrau said. "We also put good pressure on their shooters, and played their personnel real smart."
A 12-2 start didn't hurt, either.
"That was extremely important, especially on the road," Semrau said. "That really gave us confidence to start the game."
Trinetta Moore had 21 points on 9-of-11 shooting for the Seminoles (11-4, 3-1 Atlantic Coast Conference), who have won four of five.
Delvona Oliver scored 19 points, and Renneika Razor had 15 points and a career-high eight steals for Maryland (8-8, 2-3).
"We just couldn't get anything going tonight," Terrapins coach Brenda Frese said. "I was disappointed in our effort. We didn't battle for 40 minutes as a team."
The Terrapins trailed by 13 points in the first half but closed to 43-39 with 12 minutes left. Morris then scored four points in a 10-2 run that made it 53-41 with 7:41 remaining.
The Seminoles overcame 12 turnovers by shooting 50 percent from the floor _ including 5-for-5 by Moore _ in taking a 33-24 halftime lead.
Florida State took control at the outset, taking leads of 6-0 and 18-9 before Maryland finally settled into a rhythm. But after the Terrapins closed to 21-14, Moore scored four points in a 10-4 surge that put the Seminoles up by 13.
Maryland answered with three straight baskets to remain in striking distance, and a three-point play by Angel Ross at the outset of the second half got the Terrapins within six.
Minutes later, a putback by Razor and a three-point play by Anesia Smith made it 43-39. But the Terrapins would get no closer.
