All four Maryland freshmen scored in double digits as the women's basketball team shot over 50 percent from the field and cruised to a 72-38 win over UMBC on Saturday afternoon at Comcast Center. Freshman C'Vette Henson netted four three pointers to lead all scorers with a career-high 12 points as every Terrapin on the roster contributed in the win.
Maryland shot 58.3 percent from the field in the first half to take a commanding 36-19 lead over UMBC at the break. With the score tied at two apiece, the Terps went on a 17-3 tear to jump ahead, 19-5, early on. Another 13-2 run on the strength of treys coming from junior Alli Spence (Lafayette, Colo./Chatfield), senior Vicki Brick (Timonium, Md./McDonogh) and Henson (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) put the Retrievers behind, 32-10, with under seven minutes to play in the first half. Maryland's biggest lead of the half was a 23-point advantage, 36-13, but UMBC scored the final six points of the half to cut into the lead.
The Retrievers could not slow down the Terps as Maryland's hot shooting continued into the second half. Henson tallied nine of her career-high 12 points in the period and classmate Aurelie Noirez (Vandoeuvre, France/Lycee Francois Arago) added eight. UMBC's shooting struggles would not go away, making just five buckets in the final 20 minutes and none in the final eight minutes of playing time.
Maryland's freshmen class scored 42 of the team's points, with freshmen Kalika France (Forestville, Md./Bishop McNamara), Shay Doron (Great Neck, N.Y./Christ the King) and Noirez each netting 10. Junior Anesia Smith (Alexandria, Va./Hayfield) dished out a career-high nine assists to go along with six points.
The Retrievers are winless versus the Maryland in the all-time series, extending their losing streak to seven games. The Terps have also swept the Free State teams this season, going 4-0, improving its all-time record against those teams to 64-8.
The Terps take some time off for the holidays and return to the hardwood for the Surf-N-Slam Tournament in San Diego, Calif. Maryland plays No. 3 Texas Tech in the opening round on Dec. 28. The tournament concludes on Dec. 30.
