Feb. 5, 2003
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - University of Maryland head football coach Ralph Friedgen announced today the signing of 21 recruits for the 2003 season.
This year's class - which through the caliber of players it showcases shows the continued progress that Friedgen and his staff are making - features one quarterback, one running back, three wide receivers, six offensive linemen, four defensive linemen, four linebackers, one defensive back and one player who falls under the "athlete" classification.
The class again sticks to the guidelines Friedgen laid out in his first year in College Park as the Mid-Atlantic region is well represented (eight players from Maryland, D.C. and Virginia), while top players from all over the country have also signed on with the Terrapins. Also represented are the states of Florida (3), New Jersey (2), New York (2), Pennsylvania (2), Delaware (1), Georgia (1), North Carolina (1) and Ohio (1).
Among this year's signees are a number of recruits who made waves in recruiting circles at the national level. Seven players (Bolston, Cesa, Davis, Jefferson, Lattimore, Nixon and Woods) were rated among the top 25 in the nation at their positions by ESPN.com. Two others (Davis and Jefferson) were rated by SuperPrep magazine as being among the nation's top 50 players overall, regardless of position. Of SuperPrep's top 10 players in the Mid-Atlantic region, six (Bolston, Davis, Jefferson, Lattimore, Mitch and Weatherly) are members of this year's class.
