COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
The University of Maryland women's lacrosse team completed its turnaround in the Atlantic Coast Conference as it beat No. 8 Virginia, 11-8, in Charlottesville to finish its conference regular season with a 3-0 mark. It was the Terrapins third-straight win against a Top 10 opponent, with all three coming in the last week.
Maryland (5-0, 3-0 ACC) jumped out to an early 3-0 lead and the Cavaliers were never able to net the equalizer. Lauren Aumiller had a hat trick and both Cary Chasney and Caitlin Banks scored a pair of goals and added an assist but it was not enough.
Maryland jumped out early with two goals from Kelly Coppedge and a goal and an assist from Brooke Richards in the first 11:09 of the game. Virginia answered back as Pfeiffer made a save and in the fast break off of it, a long outlet pass found Chasney, who fed Banks on the goal circle for Virginia's first goal. Maryland won the ensuing draw but Kenis caused a turnover in the arc and Morgan Thalenberg picked up the loose ball, starting the fast break that found Elizabeth Pinney feeding Aumiller on the goal circle for Virginia's second goal and a 3-2 deficit.
A Maryland goal with 1:18 to play in the half moved the margin back to two at 4-2, and the Terps won the next draw. The player was called for protecting the crosse, however, and the Cavaliers gained possession. Banks fed Appelt, who rolled around the crease and scored with 1:01 to play, pulling the Cavaliers within one yet again. Maryland again won the draw and scored on an 8-meter shot, sending the teams to halftime with the Terps up 5-3.
Maryland scored the first two goals of the second half in a span of 3:36 to give them a 7-3 cushion. Thalenberg won the draw and got the ball upfield to Banks, who drove to the cage for a goal 24 seconds after the Terp tally. Another two-goal run from Maryland gave the Terps a 9-4 lead with 20 minutes to play.
Thalenberg picked up a Maryland errant pass in the midfield and the Cavalier offense found Aumiller, who was fouled on a drive and converted the 8-meter with 16:41 to play. Courtney Muller tipped a Maryland pass and Courtney Young picked the ball out of the air to start the Virginia possession. In the set offense, Aumiller was again fouled and she buried the 8-meter shot, pulling the Cavaliers back within three at 9-6 with 12:33 to play.
A two-goal burst in a span of 40 seconds from Maryland moved the margin back to five with 8:44 to play.
Pinney caused a turnover in the defensive third and in the fast break Banks found a streaking Chasney, who scored from the right of the cage with 61 seconds left in regulation. Tiffany Schummer won the draw and got the ball to Chasney, who was fouled as she drove. Chasney scored with 47 seconds left in regulation to pull Virginia back within three. Erin Sweeney won the draw and Virginia drew a foul in the arc. Tyler Leachman's shot was saved and a last second Cavalier attack did not net a goal.
The Terrapins next play at home this Saturday, March 15, at 1:00 p.m. as they will take on the Brown Bears at Ludwig Field.
