Women's Lacrosse Takes On Hopkins Saturday At Ludwig

April 10, 2003

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland lacrosse team returns to action with Saturday's matchup with local rival Johns Hopkins at Ludwig Field. The Terrapins and Blue Jays will take the field at 5:00 p.m. in a game that will serve as a prelude to the men's teams at both schools squaring off at 8:00 p.m. at Byrd Stadium.

  • The Terps - who moved to 12-1 (3-0 ACC) with Tuesday's 21-6 rout of William & Mary - are ranked second in the latest IWLCA and Warrior/Inside Lacrosse polls. Maryland sat atop both polls a week ago. Meanwhile, JHU is ranked 19th nationally in the latest IWLCA poll and enter this weekend's game with a 6-3 record.
  • Saturday's game will serve as the final tune-up for the Terrapins before heading to next week's Atlantic Coast Conference tournament. Maryland will begin play Friday at 1:00 p.m. as it has earned the No. 1 seed. The Terps' opponent in the first round of the single elimination tournament will be North Carolina and the winner will go on to face the winner of the Duke/Virginia game at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday.

    TerpNotes

  • Maryland had its largest offensive outburst of the season against William & Mary on Tuesday, scoring a season-high 21 goals and posting 11 assists. The totals are rather surprising considering the Terps waited nearly five minutes before netting their first goal and fell behind 2-0 early.
  • Senior Sonia Judd was the offensive star against the Tribe, netting seven goals on just nine shots while dishing out a pair of assists. Her seven goals were the most by a Maryland player since current Terp assistant Jen Adams scored eight while notching four assists against Johns Hopkins in 2001.
  • Not far behind in the offensive output was junior Kelly Coppedge who bested her career-high of five goals with a six-goal outing against William & Mary. Coppedge has now 40 goals (on 80 shots) on the season and leads the team with 56 points.
  • The Terps have nearly doubled up on their opponents this year in the scoring column as they have now scored 161 goals compared to their foes' 88.
  • Maryland's shooting efficiency as a team this year has been outstanding as the team is averaging a .446 shooting percentage per game despite taking over 100 shots more than its opponents on the year (361-235).
  • A pair of Terps got in the scoring column for the first time in their careers last game as junior Tess McLeod scored her first career goal and fellow junior Meg Mallon posted the first two assists of her career.
  • Head coach Cindy Timchal needs just 10 more wins to hit the 300-win plateau for her career, a mark no other collegiate head coach has yet been able to hit.

    Scouting The Dukes

  • The Johns Hopkins women's lacrosse team is led by Janine Tucker, who is in her ninth season with the Blue Jays. Under her guidance, Hopkins has posted an impressive 117-43 record.
  • Johns Hopkins enters this weekend's contest ranked 18th and sporting a 6-3 record. The Blue Jays fell to Penn State, 11-4, on Monday at Homewood Field.
  • Through April 7th, the Blue Jays have been led in scoring by senior Meghan Barnett who has posted 24 points (13 goals, 11 assists). Freshman Sarah Walsh has been the team's most efficient scorer, notching 11 goals on just 17 shots (.647 shooting pct.).
  • Jen McDonald is the team's starting goalie and has posted solid numbers through eight games (.524 save pct.; 7.55 goals against average).
  • Series record: Though roughly just 45 minutes apart, the Maryland/Hopkins series has been a short one with the Terps leading the all-time ledger, 4-0. Last season's win was the narrowest margin of victory in the series (13-8).
