Postgame Quotes: Football Spring Game

April 26, 2003

Wide Receiver Jafar Williams

On his touchdown:
"It looked like cover-two to my side and I split the safety and the corner and just kept running. Scott [McBrien] threw me a great ball."

On the defense:
"Our defense is probably one of the most dominant in the nation. That's why it is so hard for us to move the ball against them. People don't realize that they are one of the top defenses. Our offense just has to execute more. We weren't playing well early. It picked up toward the end though."

Safety Dennard Wilson

On his interception:
"I broke on the ball, it popped up [out of the receiver's hands] and I got a lucky bounce. I saw it, caught it, and ran it into the end zone."

On the secondary:
"I think we played good. We are a close-knit unit and we have a good chemistry back there. We want to do big things this year.

Running Back Sam Maldonado

On playing in the spring game:
"You have some butterflies the first game. Once you get that first hit, everybody was good after that."

On playing at Maryland:
"I feel good right now. I want the coaches to know that I am one of those guys that will do whatever it takes to produce for the team."

Safety Chris Kelley

On switching positions from quarterback to safety:
"It was my decision. It was something that had been in the back of my mind for a while. I felt that I had to do what is best for me and for this team. I feel that [switching positions] will help this team out."

Quarterback Scott McBrien

On the team's progress:
"There is still a lot of work to do. We have some new guys coming and filling in certain spots. There is a lot of work to do and that will take place over the summer, studying film and throwing on our own and really getting to know this offense a lot better. We had a good spring. It went really well and we look forward to continuing."

On the game's slow start:
"We were a little rusty. You need to execute perfectly against our defense. We go against them day in and day out. If one guy is not doing his job, it could throw the whole play off. Everybody has to be on key and it was rough coming out there and performing but guys stepped it up in the second half."
