NFL Update -- Six Terps Sign Free Agent Contracts

April 28, 2003

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - A day after the smoke has cleared from the 2003 National Football League Draft, several University of Maryland players are finding homes on NFL rosters.

Butkus and Bednarik Awards winner E.J. Henderson was the 40th overall selection and the eighth of the second round by the Minnesota Vikings, a team which has shown a penchant for Maryland players since head coach and former Terp Mike Tice arrived. The Vikings added one more after the draft when it signed Maryland's lone junior to declare, fullback James Lynch.

Lynch was not the only fullback to land in an NFL camp as backfield mate Chad Killian signed on with the San Diego Chargers. Other Terrapins to sign free agent contracts in the last day include tailback Chris Downs (Eagles), wide receiver Scooter Monroe (Eagles), defensive end Durrand Roundtree (Redskins) and offensive guard/center Todd Wike (Raiders).

In addition, standout punter Brooks Barnard is currently weighing several offers and is likely to sign with a team in the next few days.
